Manchester’s Heaton Park Tramway has been continuing to run throughout the summer with most weekends seeing trams operating along the length of the line from Middleton Road Gates to Lakeside. There have been occasions when it hasn’t been possible to run a service due to low volunteer numbers with the Manchester Tramway Museum Society always on the look out for more volunteers (see their Facebook page for more details if you think you can help – link at the end of the article) but the weekend of Saturday 17th and Sunday 17th August did see trams running on both days and this article features photos from those days. Steven Hughes is the photographer.
The next few weeks are going to be busy at the Heaton Park Tramway as well. Saturday 31st August sees a Model Tram Exhibition and that will be followed on Sunday 8th September by Tramtastic!, the tramway’s annual gala which should see all operational trams running at some point during the day.

Saturday 17th August included evening running and with the weather playing ball they were able to use Blackpool 619 in service. Its seen here passing Middleton Road Depot.

The next day – Sunday 18th August – and 619 was again in service where it was joined by Hull 96. The two trams are captured here at Middleton Road Depot with the Blackpool Replica Vanguard heading down to Middleton Road Gates.

And up at the Lakeside end of the line inside the new depot there we see two other trams – both of which have seen use during the 2024 season. Left hand tram is Stockport 5 and on the right is Blackpool 623. Manchester 173 can just be seen behind the Blackpool Brush car. (All Photographs by Steven Hughes)
