Time for another “Manchester Metrolink Then & Now” and we remain in the city centre once more.
One of the biggest pieces of infrastructure built for the original Manchester Metrolink system was the ramp which got the trams up from street level on Lower Mosley Street up to the viaduct which would take the trams to the G-Mex stop and onwards towards Altrincham.
Its hard to think now but before Metrolink came along there was no such ramp built and this is how it looked in 1990. G-Mex conference centre – now Manchester Central and using the old Manchester Central railway station building – is on the right which gives a good point of reference.
The modern image shows 3058 heading up the ramp with a service to Altrincham. Manchester Central is still there on the right but what is also apparent is the large amount of development with modern high rise building a plenty having sprung up. (Both Photographs by Keith Chadbourne)
