Sunday 30th June is another anniversary for a light rail system with Dublin’s Luas network celebrating 20 years of operation on that day. It was 2004 that trams first started running in the city again and since then the network has expanded significantly and they aren’t finished yet!
Its expected that 2024 will end up being a record breaking year with 50 million passenger journeys being surpassed. In total since it opened there have been more than 650 million passengers carried.
The network today runs for 43km and serves 67 stops across the city and its suburbs. It now consists of two lines – the Green line and the Red line – and more than 400,000 people live with a 1km of a Luas stop.
Luas is set to expand further in the coming years with the next line due to run to Finglas. Work is already underway on the final design of this line.
