Passenger journeys increase on Luas

Newly released figures by the National Transport Authority have shown that 2023 saw record-breaking numbers travel on public transport in Ireland. Figures across all public transport increased by 5% but for Dublin’s Luas tram system it was even better news than that.

The 2023 figures for Luas show that there were 48.2 million passenger journeys recorded. In comparison there were 38.7 million journeys during 2022 – that gives a 9.5% increase year on year and means they have gone past pre-pandemic numbers.

As well as good news on the number of passengers front, the same report also gives information on the reliability of the network. 2023 saw a major decrease in lost kilometres (this is in effect journeys which didn’t operate) after 2022 had seen significant issues with tram availability. Back in period 1 2022 this percentage figure was at 16% but during 2023 it was as low as 1% but did increase to 9% towards the end of the year again.
