In Pictures: Trams get set to take a rest at Beamish

As we reported last month, the tramway at Beamish is set to take a break for the first few months of 2025 to allow maintenance – of both the infrastructure and tramcars – to take place. But before they take a well deserved rest they remain operating up to Sunday 5th January 2025 (subject to weather and yet more weather warnings!). After the return of Metro services – comes the suspension of Metro services!

The Tyne and Wear Metro doesn’t look like it can catch a break at the moment. No sooner had  full service resumed through Gateshead after repairs to the road flyover then the network was hit by not one, but two issues which have impacted services once again.

In Pictures: Track continues to go down on Black Country line

If all goes according to the current plan (and let’s be honest we’ve been here before where we’ve expected things to open when they haven’t!) this time next year the West Midlands Metro network will have expanded with phase one of what is now known as the Black Country line carrying passengers between Wednesbury and Dudley. If that is to be the case the next few months look set to be busy with construction work and in this latest update we see some more progress.

Edinburgh Trams run all the way through for Hogmanay

Edinburgh is usually the centre of Hogmanay celebrations with people coming from all over the world to experience the festivities around Princes Street. The sheer numbers who attend the street party, fireworks and concerts means that it isn’t safe (or even possible) for the trams to continue to run and so plans are put in place for a split service to operate. And that was how it should have been for New Year 2025 – but then the weather had other ideas!

Blackpool Brush 622 scrapped

2024 ended with a tram scrapping as Blackpool Brush Railcoach 622 was cut-up on site at Anchorsholme Academy. The tram – which carried a version of its former Tigerrific Blackpool Zoo advertising livery – had been at the school for just over 10 years but costs involved in refurbishing it have meant it was deemed surplus to requirements by the school.

End of year figures show continued recovery for NET after last year’s financial restructuring
