Blackpool Transport Family Saver ticket offer extended

Nottingham Express Transit Engineering Works: 24th and 25th January 2026

LRTA float plans for a tram network in Derby

When the East Midlands Combined Authority launched their consultation into improving transport in the region it was widely expected that the only tram related proposals would be concerning extending Nottingham’s system, with the idea of linking it with Derby another possibility. But the Light Rail Transit Association (LRTA) seem to have grander ideas with their Regional Officer for the East Midlands, David Gibson, having drawn up a detailed plan for an extensive tram network in Derby.

In Pictures: One new advert as two removed in Manchester

Following on from yesterday’s West Midlands Metro update, Manchester Metrolink has also already seen some advert changes in early 2026 with two adverts having been removed whilst one of the trams which has seen an ad go has now received a new design – the first new advert for the year on Metrolink. The trams involved in these latest changes are 3092 and 3102.

Boy heads onto the Metro with his own version of one of the new trains!

A five year old boy from Gateshead – with dreams of being a Metro driver one day – and his mother have recently created their own version of one of the new Metro trains. And after taking it out onto the network for photos they were noticed by staff and even got to meet a Metro driver.

In Pictures: West Midlands Metro 56 gets a partial advertising livery

It didn’t take many days of 2026 before we got to report on a new advert being carried by a tram and it’s the West Midlands Metro who are fast out of the starting blocks! The tram seen adorned with new adverts is 56, although its not a full wrap with just the centre three sections carrying the vinyls.

Blackpool to introduce temporary timetable for tram maintenance

A temporary timetable is going to run on the Blackpool Tramway as from Wednesday 7th January 2026 to allow essential maintenance work to be undertaken on the fleet of Flexity2 trams. There will be two temporary timetables running – one from Wednesday 7th to Saturday 10th January and then another starting from Sunday 11th January.

UKTram celebrate a year of progress, partnership and opportunity

As is the norm at the end of the year we start to look back on our achievements over the past 12 months and UKTram are no different with their review of 2025 celebrating not only a brilliant year for the organisation but also the wider light rail sector. 2025 has seen record engagement across their functional groups, growing government confidence in light rail investment and patronage has increased to over 231 million with systems outside of London seeing a 6% uplift and vehicle miles up by 4%.

Metrocar makes its longest journey yet!

A Tyne and Wear Metrocar is set to make its West End debut! Whilst admittedly its not a real Metrocar, it will be a life-sized replica of 4001 which is part of the set for the play Gerry & Sewell, a play previously seen in Newcastle and now due to play the Aldwych Theatre for just 11 days this January.

Jane Cole recognised in King’s New Year’s Honours List

Jane Cole, who has been the Managing Director of Blackpool Transport Services Limited for past 12 years, has been recognised for services to public transport and the local community. Jane has been awarded an OBE having spent 12 years at the transport operator, alongside more than three decades in the rail industry.

What’s New on British Trams Online? 3rd January 2026

Happy New Year! Once again please accept my apologies for the disruption in updates to British Trams Online since early December 2025 – and a big thanks to everyone who checked in to see if everything was OK. We should now be starting to get back to normal and this is the first “main site” update of 2026 which as is usual just features the Advent Calendars moving into the Photos section. The Fleet Lists have also enjoyed their first major update since the end of November – hopefully I’ve remembered everything that has happened but if not please let me know! And now we just wait and see what the tram world has to bring us in 2026!
