Blackpool and Beamish get recruiting

Two of the most prominent tram operators in the UK are currently recruiting for positions which will enable the successful applicants the opportunity to shape upcoming developments at the respective locations in a big way. For Blackpool Transport, the search is now officially underway for the person to replace Trevor Roberts as head of the company, whilst Beamish Museum are inviting applicants to join the Transport & Industry department in an exciting new role.

Since the shock departure of Trevor Roberts as Managing Director of Blackpool Transport Services Ltd, his former colleague, Director of Delivery Bob Mason has taken on his role as a temporary measure. However, a more permanent solution is now being sought with the managerial position being advertised on the company’s website. A competitive salary (exact figures are dependent on experience) is promised, with a relocation package and pension scheme also on offer. The new MD will answer to a Board of Directors, and it is pleasing to see that the online person specification indicates that prior experience of working with trams is desirable. Other, essential requirements of candidates include five years’ experience in a comparable role, knowledge of the legal compliance associated with being a director, experience of budgeting and financial management, and a good understanding of public transport legislation. Relevant professional qualifications are also an essential requirement.

Naturally there is much more to this job than playing with trams, and anyone considering applying for the position is advised to think carefully before going ahead! The new boss will ultimately be responsible for a large and successful bus network, as well as the upgraded tramway and the heritage tram fleet. The closing date for applications is 3rd May, with a final interview scheduled to be held at the end of that month. Full details of this opportunity can be found at http://www.blackpooltransport.com/careers/view/managing-director. Let us hope that whoever takes the place of Mr. Roberts will be equally supportive of the drive to build on the recent successes with the heritage trams, whilst also pushing forward to improve the core service provision on both trams and buses.

Meanwhile, at the same time, Beamish Museum have advertised the chance to take on the role of ‘Keeper of Transport’ at this progressive open air museum. This is a new position which will support the team leader in this area, but will nonetheless carry a good deal of responsibility. As with the Blackpool job, an interest and understanding of trams is not the sole requirement here, as the job will entail working with other forms of transport such as railways, steam road engines, buses and horse-drawn vehicles, all of which contribute to the extensive collection of the museum. A good knowledge of developing and using safety critical systems to ensure the safe use of working exhibits is essential, whilst more excitingly, candidates should be willing and able to make a significant contribution to the ambitious transport events held at Beamish, which have featured a number of visiting trams over the years.

The new post is another clear indicator that the once undervalued transport aspect of Beamish is now very much appreciated, and that recent developments to expand this side of the museum look set to continue well into the future, with transport expected to be a key feature of new developments such as the proposed creation of a 1950s themed area. Full details of the Beamish post can be found at http://www.beamish.org.uk/vacancies/ along with an application form.
