Birkenhead tramway to appear on TV

The Birkenhead heritage tramway is set to feature prominently in a new TV documentary programme set to be shown on BBC2 on Monday 6th January at 6:30pm, after a filming session a few months ago. The area around Manchester and Birkenhead is the subject of the first episode in a new series of the ‘Great British Railway Journeys’ series, hosted by Michael Portillo, and this will feature the Wirral tramway as well as the region’s railway history.

The town of Birkenhead is of course extremely significant in British transport history, as it was home to the very first street tramway in the country, so it is highly appropriate that this will be acknowledged by the programme makers. This show should also provide some useful exposure for the Merseyside Tramway Preservation Society and the Birkenhead tramway, hopefully promoting their activities to a bigger audience. As the museum at Taylor Street will be open each Saturday and Sunday afternoon from the beginning of January with trams also running, viewers who like what they see will be able to sample the delights of Birkenhead for themselves just days after the programme is aired.
