The Light Rail Standards and Safety Board (LRSSB) have appointed an experienced safety auditor and accident investigator into a new role which will help to continue their excellent progress in improving safety across the UK light rail sector.
Peter Hughes has been appointed as Audit and Safety Officer, and will be responsible for initiating safety audits within the sector, assisting in the maintenance of the safety risk management framework and evaluating compliance with standards and regulations. Other duties will include helping in the development of new light rail standards and reviews of existing ones, whilst supporting the organisation in implementing effective benchmarking across the sector.
Peter has worked in rail safety since 1991, mostly in the UK and Australia, and is a specialist in risk analytics. He has also served as an expert witness in legal proceedings, following several fatal accidents at level crossings and authored a number of journal and conference papers.
He has also created and delivered training courses for Queensland University of Technology’s Graduate Certificate programme, Huddersfield University’s MSc programme in railway safety, and a professional training course for the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET).
Following his appointment Peter commented: “I’m delighted to join the LRSSB as it further expands the scope of its work, and I’m looking forward to meeting safety professionals from across the sector who share our commitment to further driving down the risk of accidents and other hazardous incidents on UK tramways.”
Carl Williams, LRSSB Chief Executive, added: “Peter brings a wealth of experience to this new role, further strengthening the LRSSB’s expert team as we embark on a series of important new projects while building on our success to date.”
