Manchester Metrolink Then & Now: The Snipe

With our last article of 2023 we have a final (for now) edition of “Manchester Metrolink Then & Now” and its back to the East Manchester line out to Ashton-under-Lyne for this pair of photos.

We’re at the side of the Manchester Road here as we look to the east towards Ashton. This is the East Manchester line and we are between the stops at Audenshaw and Ashton Moss, its on the second phase of the line which would open on 9th October 2013.

Image number one is from 5th April 2011 and Metrolink tracks would eventually be laid on the left here where there is evidence of initial constructions works. The Snipe pub is the white building in the mid distance.

10th August 2023 and Metrolink is now firmly established as part of the scene here with 3063 approaching us on the way to Weaste. The Snipe is still seen just beyond the bus shelter with the bus layby still in place. (Both Photographs by Keith Chadbourne)
