Many readers of this website will probably remember that at the time that Manchester Metrolink’s original T68 trams were moved en masse away from Trafford Depot not all of them ended up heading to Rotherham and a date with the scrapman. Three of the 26 ended up being transferred to Long Marston in Warwickshire after they were acquired for testing purposes on behalf of UK Tram.

Supertram rail replacement area 3 details announced as normal frequencies reintroduced

The next stage of rail replacement works on Stagecoach Supertram will get underway from Saturday 25th July with the work due to take place between Gleadless Townend and Spring Lane. This will see no trams running between Sheffield Station and Halfway with the Purple route completely suspended. Also from this date there will be a further step-up in frequencies with a return to the standard 12 minute service during weekdays on the Blue and Yellow routes.

Schoolchildren artwork on display at new Metro depot

New artwork designed by year 6 pupils at Percy Main Primary School has been put on display at the new Tyne and Wear Metro depot in Howdon as part of a safety campaign. The artwork has been put on a banner at the gates of the new depot, currently being constructed to allow some trains to be stabled and receive overnight maintenance during the redevelopment of the depot at Gosforth.

MER to return!

It has been announced that the Manx Electric Railway (along with the Isle of Man Steam Railway) will return to service later this month having not been running since March as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic. The MER will be on limited operation only (Saturdays to Tuesdays) for a short-period until mid-September.

In Pictures: Old tram track rediscovered in Colindale

Over the years we’ve often featured rediscovered tram track underneath the road surface, exactly as it was when the tramways were abandoned and the concrete had just been put on top. But in some locations the track was removed and cut up into smaller sections to then be used to strengthen the road surface. One such location was Edgware Road in Colindale, London where recent utility work has rediscovered these small sections of track once more.

In Pictures: Ashton-under-Lyne Interchange construction work

As part of the continued move towards fully integrated transport in Greater Manchester a new transport interchange is being constructed next to the Metrolink Ashton-under-Lyne terminus to allow seamless change between bus and tram. Although the project has been delayed by the pandemic – but then what hasn’t – the project is now approaching completion, although no opening date has yet been announced.

In Pictures: Railcoach 279 restoration continues

The thing with all these Covid-19 restrictions is that it makes you yearn for a time when normality can return which is something to look forward to in itself but when you couple this with the anticipation of the conclusion of some restoration projects then there really is a future we can all look to with excitement. Possibly one of the most exciting projects, which has continued to make excellent progress throughout lockdown and beyond, is the recreation of a traditionally shaped English Electric Railcoach with 679 becoming 279 again and once we can report on excellent progress in the work to complete this tram.

In Pictures: Crich re-opens to the public

Saturday 11th July 2020 saw the re-opening of the Crich Tramway Village for the first time since it was forced to close as a result of Covid-19 pandemic. With new guidelines in place – including the wearing of face masks for passengers on-board the trams and timed tram ride tickets having to be obtained from admissions – a visit to Crich is now a different experience to that which could be enjoyed pre-pandemic but the main thing is that it is as safe as possible for visitors whilst also allowing the museum to gain some much needed funds through the admittance of those visitors.
