In Pictures: West Midlands Metro services resume

After a gap of 80 days trams are once again running on the West Midlands Metro. Although its not a full service yet – we’ll have to wait for more trams to be repaired before that happens – it does mark a significant step towards normality on the network with trams now operating between Wolverhampton St George’s and Bull Street every 12-15 minutes during the main part of the day.

Strike dates announced for London Tramlink

Two 48 hour strikes have been announced on London Tramlink following the recent ballot of ASLEF members. The strikes are scheduled to take place on Tuesday 28th/Wednesday 29th June and Wednesday 13th/Thursday 14th July.

Second phase of Gosforth Depot redevelopment completed

Work on the redevelopment of the Tyne and Wear Metro’s depot at Gosforth is continuing at a good pace with the second phase (of six) now completed. This has seen three more sections of line being successfully installed. Phase three will now begin which will see more of the old depot building demolished.

In Pictures: Its another M5000 arrival and another into service update!

The first full week of June has been another busy one for Manchester Metrolink as not only have they welcomed the latest M5000 to the city but one of the recent arrivals has also entered service. The arrival came first with 3142 being delivered on Monday 6th June whilst just a day later 3140 entered service.

Two more trams for East Anglia Transport Museum

Two of the erstwhile Fleetwood Heritage Leisure Trust collection of trams are set to find a new home at the East Anglia Transport Museum with news that Blackpool trams Brush Car 290 and Ex-Towing Railcoach 678 will be heading east later this year. A team from the museum recently visited the trams to complete negotiations for their acquisition with preparations for their movement to follow.

New Edinburgh Council leader calls on Scottish government to intervene over Trams Inquiry

It may seem hard to believe but it has now been over eight years since Alex Salmond (then First Minister of the Scottish Government) announced an inquiry into the original Edinburgh Trams project after it went well over budget and took much longer than planned to just build a small section of the initially announced network. And now with there still no apparent sign of an end of the Inquiry new Labour leader of the City of Edinburgh Council, Cllr Cammy Day, is calling on the Scottish Government to intervene.

West Midlands Metro services set to resume on Thursday 9th June

We finally have a date! West Midlands Metro services will resume on Thursday 9th June for the first time since Saturday 19th March with a sufficient number of trams having been tested and cleared for operation. In preparation for this return a shadow service was running on 7th June including trams stopping at platforms with doors opening – although notable on this test running was that there is still only one Urbos3 seemingly available for use with the remainder being the newer Urbos 100 model.

In Pictures: Jubilee Bank Holiday weekend works in Sheffield

The extended Jubilee Bank Holiday weekend gave Stagecoach Supertram the ideal opportunity to undertake some further rail replacement works with the section along Infirmary Road being taken care of meaning that services on both the Blue and Yellow routes were affected throughout the weekend.

Further announcement on reduced opening for Crich

Following the conclusion of the Great British Seaside event – which ran from 28th May to 4th June albeit without any trams – the Crich Tramway Village have announced that the museum will now only be open on limited dates until repairs to the infrastructure can be completed. At the same time there has been a further reduction in admission prices.

In Pictures: Blackpool Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Tram Parade

Across the UK over the long Bank Holiday weekend (Thursday 2nd to Sunday 5th June) there were a number of events taking place to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. From concerts to street parties, Blackpool’s main offering was a Tram Parade running Pleasure Beach-Little Bispham-North Pier (for no other reason than why not!) on Thursday 2nd June featuring a total of 13 trams (we had been promised at least a dozen and ended up with a baker’s dozen!).

In Pictures: A look at the trams of the Ulster Transport Museum

It has been almost 50 years since trams last ran in the Northern Irish city of Belfast (1954 to be precise was the last time they ran) but they may be gone but are not forgotten as several examples of the once numerous fleet are now preserved and on display at the Ulster Folk and Transport Museum in Cultra, 7 miles to the east of Belfast. As well as Belfast trams the museum is also home to a Hill of Howth tram and a vehicle from the Giants Causeway Tramway as well. In this pictorial article photos come from David Maxwell of a visit in May 2022.

Metrolink One day travelcards to be removed from get me there app

Transport for Greater Manchester have announced that one day travelcards will no longer be available for purchase through the get me there app from mid-June as part of a continued crackdown on fare evasion. Its said that a number of passengers chose not to travel with a ticket and then when they see inspectors board the trams quickly purchase this ticket on the app and so the hope is the removal of this ticket will stop that occurring again.

The end of Manchester Metrolink 1016

Now I know that sometimes we are a little slow to bring you some news stories but this one is probably a new record! Manchester Metrolink 1016 is believed to have been scrapped after suffering damage at its long-term storage facility at Long Marston with it (or at least half of it) seen on a low loader in June 2021 leaving the Warwickshire site.
