Coventry Very Light Rail has been recognised at the British Construction & Infrastructure Awards, with Colas Rail and Coventry City Council being named joint winners of the Innovation Impact Award.
The judges praised the Coventry team for challenging established approaches to infrastructure development and demonstrating how innovation can be implemented at scale. They also highlighted the potential benefits for other towns and cities across the UK which could come out of the project.
The awards are organised by New Civil Engineer and the Institution of Civil Engineers. They recognise excellent in infrastructure delivery and projects that deliver positive outcomes to society.
The next phase of Coventry Very Light Rail – which will see a new and longer demonstration line constructed in the city – is currently being developed. It is hoped that the concept of Very Light Rail will reduce costs for the construction of light rail schemes across the UK. It features an innovative shallow-track design which should reduce the need for extensive utility diversions.
