VolkerRail have completed a major programme of track renewals on the London Trams network, with over 750 metres of embedded track replaced through the central Croydon loop during August 2026.
Life expired infrastructure was replaced on Wellesley Road and Tamworth Road during a month-long closure. The work saw the renewal of embedded track, rail replacement, welding, bonding, signalling and concrete works, alongside reinstatement activities including block paving, white lining and surfacing works.
As part of the renewals work, VolkerRail introduced an innovative rail encapsulation system which was trialled on the scheme to reduce manual handling during installation and help improve efficiency during delivery.
This is the second innovation delivered by VolkerRail whilst undertaking track maintenance across the network. The first came in February where they partnered with Sika to trial its Icosit KC 350/45 polymer rail grout, to support improved efficiency during construction and long-term performance of the asset.
Adam Meek, Project Manager at VolkerRail, said: “Successfully delivering these renewals is a fantastic achievement by everyone involved. Through close collaboration with TfL, our supply chain partners and the wider delivery team, we were able to complete a significant programme of work safely and efficiently.
“I’m incredibly proud of the commitment, expertise and teamwork demonstrated throughout the project.”
