In Pictures: Supertram trackworks – May 2026

The May school half-term holidays provided an ideal opportunity for more trackworks to take place on South Yorkshire Supertram as investment to improving the network continued. This time work was taking place at Gleadless Townend, Donetsk Way, and Westfield leading to alterations to Blue and Purple route services. This article takes a look at some of the work around Gleadless Townend, with images courtesy of the camera of Stuart Cooke.

The work got underway on Saturday 23rd May and is due to be completed by the end of Sunday 31st May. During this time the following tram service operated:

  • Blue – Malin Bridge to Gleadless Townend
  • Purple – suspended
  • Yellow – Normal service with minor changes to times
  • Tram-Train – Normal service

Replacement bus services ran on the affected sections.

Kindly taken by a member of the VolkerRail team completing the work this first view shows the work on the junction at Gleadless Townend.

Another close-up view of the newly laid track.

A wider view from the other side of the fence as work continues on replacing the track at the junction.

With Gleadless Townend being a temporary terminus the points on the crossover had to be changed manually. That’s what is seen here with 118 in the background.

We then see 118 on the crossover as it returns to Gleadless Townend stop to help back to Malin Bridge. (All Photographs by Stuart Cooke, 26th May 2026)
