RAIB start investigation following Metrolink derailment

The Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB) have announced that they have started an investigation after a tram derailed at Piccadilly on the Manchester Metrolink network on 5th April 2026.

The derailment saw wheels on one axle of a tram travelling from Ashton to Bury come off the rails when the tram was arriving at the stop. The derailment occurred at around 1339 with a double unit (which included 3060) as they were traveling at approximately 8mph.

The driver was initially unaware of the derailment and the tram continued into the stop allowing all passengers to alight. There were no reported injuries with only minor damage caused to both the tram and surrounding infrastructure.

The RAIB investigation will determine the sequence of events which led to the derailment and will also include consideration of:

  • The design, maintenance and management of the track at this location
  • The design, maintenance and management of the tram that derailed
  • The operation of the tram at the time of the derailment
  • Any underlying factors which might have contributed to the derailment

The findings of the investigation will be published upon their conclusion.
