Since the start of service on Monday 10th March 2025, South Yorkshire Supertram services on the Blue and Yellow routes have been operating to a revised timetable. At the time of the announcement it was said this was due to additional maintenance and this has now been confirmed as being to the trams.
The statement released about the additional maintenance puts the blame on the “ageing stock”. As most will be aware the majority of the trams in Sheffield were built by Siemens-Duewag for the opening of the network in 1994-5 and are now considered to be in the twilight of their operating careers. It is hoped for their replacement in the near future but before then £1.5 million has been set-a-side over the next couple of years for extensive overhauls.
The temporary timetable sees trams running every 15 minutes during the main part of the day instead of every 12. It has now been confirmed that with good progress being made on the maintenance the normal timetable will resume from Tuesday 18th March.
Sean English, Supertram Managing Director, said: “Significant wear and tear over the winter period has affected the number of trams able to run safely across the network. Safety will always be our number one priority, therefore we’ve had to make a small number of cancellations in recent days.
“In order to give passengers certainty, a move to a temporary timetable will help them plan their journeys while repairs are made as quickly as possible. I would urge passengers to check the timetable on the Travel South Yorkshire website and mobile app. We apologise to our customers for any disruption this causes.”
