In the recent update from Nexus on how they are planning the phased introduction of the new trains for the Tyne and Wear Metro they also mentioned how as units enter service it will lead to the continued disposal of already withdrawn and stored original Metrocars. And that is exactly what has happened recently as two further trains have gone away to meet their end.
The first of the trains to be transported off Metro metals for scrap was 4037 which made the trip on Tuesday 4th February 2025. This was then followed by 4076 which was moved for scrapping on Thursday 6th February 2025.
The final movements of 4076 before being loaded onto a lorry for its move were caught on video by YouTube channel T&WM Fan and this can be viewed at https://youtu.be/BmMQi0vJBHE?si=hnO7EzGH2wlUROJX. This saw the heavily graffitied 4076 moved by 4006 and 4058 at Howdon and then pulled onto the low loader for its trip to the scrapman.
This now makes it ten Metrocars which have gone for scrap: 4002 (October 2023), 4022 (2019), 4055 (2023), 4062 (2023), 4070 (May 2024), 4077 (May 2024), 4083 (October 2023) and 4088 (May 2024) being the others.
