The annual Global Light Rail Awards is a little over a month away and details of nominees is starting to come through. Edinburgh Trams, the Light Rail Safety and Standards Board and UK Tram have announced they have received nominations.
Edinburgh Trams have been nominated in three categories at the Global Light Rail Awards. Nominations for Scotland’s only tram system include UK Operator of the Year as well as Most Improved System and Best Customer Initiative.
Over the past 12 months passenger numbers have doubled on the network and it has excelled during major events in the city. This included the Taylor Swift concerts at Scottish Gas Murrayfield Stadium with the way passengers were moved seamlessly leading to the Best Customer Initiative nomination.
Lea Harrison, Managing Director at Edinburgh Trams, said: “Coming so soon after success in another competition that saw us named as Team of the Year at the Scottish Transport Awards, this recognition from colleagues in the light rail sector is something our entire team can be really proud of.
“We’ll be facing some stiff competition at the awards in October, but to be leading contenders in three different categories is a fantastic achievement in itself, and one that reflects the continued popularity of our network with both Edinburgh residents and the millions of visitors the city attracts every year.”
Meanwhile, the LRSSB have confirmed that the national campaign aimed at enhancing passenger safety around UK tramway’s has been nominated in the Significant Safety Initiative category. They also have a nomination in the Technical Innovation category for their work in digitising its extensive portfolio of products and services, including the launch of an online Safety Hub and enhancements to the accident and incident reporting system.
Carl Williams, LRSSB Chief Executive, said: “The past year has seen our organisation deliver on a wide range of initiatives that have been welcomed across the sector. We’re delighted these efforts are being recognised by award judges, and to be shortlisted in two very competitive categories reflects the hard work and professionalism of the entire LRSSB team.”
And UK Tram have also revealed they are up for Team of the Year. This is as a result of work at their Centre of Excellence with a series of projects aimed at driving growth in the UK light rail sector.
The Global Light Rail Awards will take place on Wednesday 2nd October at The Bloomsbury Ballroom in London.
The Awards website don’t give exact details of who has been nominated in which category but it does reveal that amongst the other organisations up for awards are Blackpool Transport Services, KeolisAmey Docklands, KeolisAmey Metrolink, Keolis Nottingham, Luton Dart, Midland Metro Alliance, Nexus, Tram Operations Limited (London Trams operator), Transdev Dublin Light Rail, Transport for Greater Manchester and West Midlands Metro.
