In Pictures: New East Anglia Transport Museum tram depot structure starts to go up

More positive news to report from the East Anglia Transport Museum where, after the preparation works which have taken place over the summer (by museum volunteers), the structure of the new tram depot on the new land is starting to go up.

The museum in Carlton Colville close to Lowestoft is in the middle of a major expansion which came about after the acquisition of additional land. This will enable the tramway to be extended, along with the East Suffolk Light Railway and the trolleybus route as well as providing more undercover storage. The first major structure to be built is the tram depot (and with their ever-increasing tram fleet that’s hardly a surprise!) and the summer months have seen considerable preparatory works undertaken.

The work has now reached a stage where it is possible for the main structure to be installed of the depot and this has seen the upright supports put into place. There does still remain a considerable amount of work to be completed before any vehicles can move in but the speed this project seems to be moving at is cause for celebration!

The first upright of the new depot is seen here being installed on 13th September 2022.

One day later and there is considerably more than one upright in place!

15th September and even more progress! The roof trusses of the structure are now being put into place.

Another view of the roof trusses being put into place.

The new land will open up new photo opportunities such as this shot of Sheffield 513 heading towards the woods as a service on the extended East Suffolk Light Railway passes in the foreground. (All Photographs by Tim Major)
