Sir Paul Smith latest to have tram named after him in Nottingham

There has been a renaming of a tram in Nottingham with 230 now carrying the name after Beeston-born designer Sir Paul Smith. This was a renaming for the tram with it having previously been named George Green (a British mathematical physicist who lived in the 18th and 19th centuries).

Long-serving Metro team member recognsied at Light Rail Awards

Gavin Lloyd, Technical Engineer at West Midlands Metro, was recognised at the recent Global Light Rail Awards in the Judges Special Award category. He has worked at West Midlands Metro for 18 years and in 2015 was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease but in spite of that has continued to work at Wednesbury Depot.

A 21 year old man was taken to hospital with potentially life threatening injuries after he was it by a tram near to the Shaw & Crompton stop on the Oldham & Rochdale line of Manchester Metrolink.

NHS workers poems showcased on Metro

There is more poetry for travellers on the Tyne and Wear Metro to enjoy with a series of poems written by NHS workers now being showcased at several stations on the network. These are the result of the first Newcastle Hospitals Charity writer-in-residence programme for Newcastle Hospitals staff, hosted in partnership with writing development agency for the North of England, New Writing North.

In Pictures: Update from West Midlands Metro Dudley extension

If you believe the literature from the Midland Metro Alliance this time next year we may be on the final run-up to services starting on the West Midlands Metro extension from Wednesbury to Dudley. In Pictures: Birkenhead 7 at the Wirral Transport Show

As the Wirral Transport Museum and Heritage Tramway remains closed following the Big Heritage takeover and work underway to update the attraction, the former Wirral Bus and Tram Show was again, in 2024, retitled the Wirral Transport Show with the focus on the buses of the area. But despite that there was a single tram which was viewable on the day, with it currently being located at Pacific Road.

Pay as You Go contactless payments to be extended across whole Bee Network from March 2025

Public transport users who travel on both Manchester Metrolink and Bee Network buses will be able to enjoy price caps between the two modes as from 23rd March 2025. Having already been used on the trams for some time, the expansion will mean that passengers will be able to seamlessly change between the trams and Bee Network buses (any bus services which are operating outside of the Bee Network are not included) using contactless payment with the fares automatically calculated with a daily price cap.

Bradford Council give preferred route for West Yorkshire tram system

Earlier this year details were announced of a major public consultation into the planned West Yorkshire tram system which would, initially, see two lines built including one linking Leeds and Bradford. As part of the consultation Bradford Council have given their views which includes backing the overall scheme as well as giving their preferred route.

Nottingham Trams Limited announces reduced profits – but increased passenger numbers

The latest set of accounts filed for Nottingham Trams Limited – who operate Nottingham Express Transit on behalf of the Tramlink consortium – have shown that although passenger numbers increased in the year to end of 2023, profits decreased.

Collision on Metrolink’s Ashton line

Tuesday 8th October saw a collision between a car and a tram on the Ashton-under-Lyne line of Manchester Metrolink leading to one man being taken to hospital and the suspension of services whilst the emergency services attended.
