The annual Tram Weekend at the Crich Tramway Village took place on Saturday 13th and Sunday 14th September and once again the team at the home of the National Tramway Museum managed to put an excellent show with trams in service and the famous photo line-ups on the depot fan combining for an entertaining two days showcasing tram preservation in the UK.

Competition winners enjoy VIP West Midlands Metro depot tour

Pupils from Regents Park Community Primary School have recently been welcomed to the West Midlands depot at Wednesbury as part of a competition prize which saw them enjoy a VIP guided tour behind the scenes. They were there thanks to their classmate Sakinah Begun, aged 11, who won the top prize in a competition organised in the run-up to the launch of the Bulls in the City arts trail.

11 up at the top of the August mileage charts at Seaton

Another month has ended and another newsletter from the Seaton Tramway has given us the mileage figures for the trams on the 3-mile line to Colyton. August is the peak holiday month with additional services running when required and so its no surprise that it was dominated by the highest capacity trams, aided no doubt by the nice weather experienced!

Crich Tramway Village to host special talk on British public transport

Well-known journalist, author, and railway historian, Christian Wolmar, is to be visit the Crich Tramway Village on the evening of Friday 19th September 2025 to give a talk entitled Trams for the Future – It’s A Moving Story. And part of the proceeds of the evening will go towards the restoration of Blackpool Centenary 645 which is set to become the new Access Tram for all visitors to the Crich Tramway Village.

Ozzy Osbourne name removed from two trams

Around the time of the passing of rock legend Ozzy Osbourne several additional trams received his name to allow the West Midlands Metro to pay their respects. At one time there were no fewer than four trams which carried the name, but more recently two have seen it removed leaving just two.

TfGM release statement after sentencing of man who assaulted Metrolink staff

Nathan Wright, of Bebbington Close, Sale, has been jailed for 31 months after pleading guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm and assault by beating. He assaulted a customer service representative and an off—duty Metrolink driver at Old Trafford Metrolink stop on 23rd March 2025.

A trip to… Great Orme Tramway, Llandudno

In this article we head to the only operational tramway in Wales (at the moment!), the Great Orme Tramway in Llandudno. Opening in 1902 it is the only funicular, or cable-hauled, tramway in Britain which travels on public roads. It works in two sections with two trams running in opposite directions on each section. Plans progress for Greater Manchester tram and tram-train expansion

£6 million worth of funding has been confirmed to help develop proposals for the planned major expansion of tram and tram-train services across Greater Manchester. As previously revealed in the June government announcement of £15bn for transport projects in England’s city regions, Mayor of Greater Manchester, Andy Burnham has grand plans to expand and improve public transport in the region and this £6 million will be used to develop those plans further.

Another old Metro train leaves – but this time its not for scrap!

Normally when an original Metrocar is seen sandwiched between two of its operational sisters and being towed to Howdon its not a good sign as it means its about to embark on a one-way trip to the scrapman (or recycling man as it is!). But the latest train to be moved like that has a more positive future with 4001 being moved there so it could be moved to its new home in preservation – the Stephenson Steam Railway in North Tyneside.

Utility trials underway on Coventry Very Light Rail

The demonstration runs on the 220-metre long Very Light Rail track in Coventry may be over but that doesn’t mean that evaluation of the technology has ended. One of the reported advantages of the technology is that it will reduce the need for the costly and time-consuming utility diversions and the next stage of evaluation will see different methods being explored.

Revised Blackpool Tramway timetable for World Fireworks Championships

Blackpool Transport have confirmed that there are no plans for a split service to operate on the tramway during the first of three dates for the World Fireworks Championships on Saturday 13th September 2025. Although it is planned that trams will run along the entire tramway there will be a revised service running, which will include an additional shuttle service running between North Station and Little Bispham.
