In Pictures: Edinburgh Trams splits in two for Hogmanay

With Edinburgh being the centrepiece of Hogmanay celebrations with major events taking place in and around the iconic Princes Street, the trams in the city have to operate a revised service. Before the extension to Newhaven was opened this just meant that trams terminated short, but since trams ran along Leith Walk and beyond a split service has been planned. And that is exactly what happened again – and this time the weather was playing nice and the celebrations didn’t have to be cancelled!

New Metro ticket gates go live at Regent Centre

Driving training complete on new Metro fleet

All Tyne and Wear Metro drivers have now completed their training on the new Stadler trains, marking another milestone in the introduction of the new fleet of 46 trains. Over 200 members of Metro train crew, including drivers and operations managers, have undertaken the intensive training programme with the last set of drivers going through the conversion course in December 2025.

Firefighters start to use old Metrocar

Amongst all the departures from the Tyne and Wear Metro network recently, not all have been on a final one-way trip to the scrapman. Of course, we have seen 4001 enter preservation but there is also 4019 which has been donated to the Tyne and Wear Fire Service and they have now started to use it at their training centre in Washington.

A signalling engineer who has devoted 38 years of his working life to the Tyne and Wear Metro has retired. 66-year-old John Eagle has worked on the signalling since 1987 but has now bid an emotional farewell to his colleagues.

Funding to go towards sensors on Metrolink aimed to stop tram surfers

Transport for Greater Manchester have confirmed £4.6 million worth of funding to install new sensors on Manchester Metrolink trams to try and help stop tram surfers. Tram surfing – where individuals grab hold of the back of trams, or on the couplers between two coupled trams – has long been a scourge of tramways and after two people died in 2021, TfGM were told they needed to take action to prevent any further incidents.
