In Pictures: Birmingham Eastside testing continues

The next extension on a UK tramway due to open will be the short addition to the West Midlands Metro network from the Birmingham City Centre delta junction to Millennium Point. It had been hoped that this would be open by now, with official documentation saying it should have opened in December 2025 (with that being delayed from the original plan anyway), but issues found during testing with the signalling meant that this has been pushed back – and no new date has yet been mentioned But testing is continuing as we see in this pictorial update. New trams for Croydon and DLR extension to Thamesmead on TfL Business Plan

Transport for London (TfL) have set out their ambitious programme for the future to help deliver a vision that encourages public transport, active travel, and supports new homes and jobs with the release of their draft business plan covering the period until 2029/30. This plan isn’t about big announcements of new projects but consolidating TfL’s plans, and will include a fleet of new trams in Croydon as well as progressing the DLR extensions to Beckton Riverside and Thamesmead.

Another medium/long term absentee on Manchester Metrolink has returned to service with 3127 back in use after approximately eight months. The tram was noted back in service on 3rd February 2026, although its not known if this was its first day back.

Big Heritage try to start legal action over Wirral Council

You may have been thinking you hadn’t heard a lot about the plans for the Wirral Transport Museum and Heritage Tramway for a while, in fact very little has been reported ever since the “Merseyside Three” trams departed for their new lives at Crich. The reason for the apparent silence has now been revealed in the local press with reports that Big Heritage have tried to start legal action against Wirral Council’s decision to remove funding worth £4.5 million from the museum.

In Pictures: Update on Crich’s new Access Tram conversion

After a couple of years without an Access Tram, 2026 is set to be an important for the Crich Tramway Village with plans for the entry into service of Access Tram 2, with Blackpool Centenary 645 currently being converted in the workshops at the home of the National Tramway Museum. Monday 2nd February saw a special supporters event held at the museum which allowed a check to be made on recent progress on the conversion. Steven Hughes was one of those who saw at first hand the ongoing work.

In Pictures: Driver Training continues in Sheffield

In recent months, South Yorkshire Supertram has been suffering from some well publicised staff shortages which led to the introduction of a temporary timetable from the end of November 2025. In order to resolve these issues they are continuing to recruit more drivers and to this end driver training trams are out on the network most days.

Blackpool Transport have been continuing their campaign to remind the public about the need to be alert around the tramway, with the first of several school visits taking place. The tramway was one of the first to embrace the LRSSB backed “TWO LINES = STOP” campaign and will now be reinforcing this in local schools.
