Edinburgh Trams receive “Highly Commended” award for Permit+ system

Edinburgh Trams have been recognised at another award ceremony, although this time its not quite the expected type of ceremony for a transport network! This time its the web based system for managing Authority to Work permits, PERMIT+ which has been rewarded at the Cloud Computing Awards.

Since its introduction in 2023, PERMIT+ has processed more than 3000 permits, which ensures Edinburgh Trams’ engineering team and control room can monitor work near the tramway and ensure that safety standards are upheld.

PERMIT+ was developed by Codemakers in collaboration with Edinburgh Trams and provides an efficient and secure way for tram operators to oversee permits, which are required for contractors who are looking work on or near the trams.

This system has now been recognised with a “Highly Commended” at the Cloud Computing Awards for Most Innovative Cloud Product or Service.

Iain MacLeod, Edinburgh Trams’ Authority to Work Manager, said: “We’re delighted that the PERMIT+ website was highly commended at the Cloud Computing Awards. The award reflects the dedication of the Codemakers team, who have worked with us since before 2023 to build an efficient system which allows contractors to work safely near the tramway, and PERMIT+ has transformed our workflow since it was put into place.

“We’d encourage anyone looking to work on or near the tramway to look at the permit requirements, so that we can continue to ensure the safety of everyone involved”.

Anyone working within 10 metres of the tramway has to apply for permission to carry out any intended works. This must be done at least 21 calendar days before works are planned to allow sufficient time to coordinate the necessary third-party permissions.
