Trams &: South Yorkshire Supertram 119 & bendy bus

Today “Trams &” is heading into Sheffield and with the return of bendy buses to the streets of the city during rail replacement works we take the chance to see a tram with one of those vehicles.

This is a pretty familiar location in the centre of Sheffield where the tramway runs on a segregated section of track alongside High Street between the stops at Castle Square and Cathedral. We’ve featured photos of trams running along here on many occasions but its not often that we see a bendy bus alongside!

Sheffield was the first place in the UK to introduce bendy buses but they had been missing from the city for some time, until that was one of the companies providing vehicles for the tram replacement service during trackworks at the end of May 2025 sent several to carry passengers from the city centre out to the Blue and Yellow routes beyond Cathedral. This particular example is a Mercedes Benz Citaro O53OG and carries the number 11101 in the City Transport fleet. It used to run for First York and in this image is operating on replacement service YE1 to Middlewood.

Alongside the bus is Siemens-Duewag 119, which has always run in Sheffield and has been doing so since arriving in 1994. On this day it was running on the Blue route which would terminate at Cathedral before returning to Halfway.
