Market Street stop to get temporary shelters

Work to install two temporary shelters on the Manchester Metrolink stop at Market Street will necessitate the closure of the stop from 2200 on Sunday 8th March until the start of service on Monday 9th March. The original shelters on the stop were removed last month as part of the modernisation works and eventually a new larger single shelter will be installed but so that passengers will not be exposed to the elements these temporary structures will be in use from the start of service on Monday 9th March.

It is a pity that Cornbrook cannot have a shelter to keep off the wind rain and sleet at this exposed station. I was chilled through waiting for the airport tram so I pity the poor regulars who have to wait on a regular basis due to failed trams.

Too true David. Like you I’ve suffered, not always in silence, at Cornbrook. However, whilst passing through there on 4th March I learned a valuable lesson from a lady driver awaiting her tram to Eccles. She simply stood at the end of the platform by the bannister at the top of the stairs, facing back towards Deansgate Castlefield, sheltered in the lee of the building. I certainly reduced the bite of the cross wind. Seems we can learn a lot from the ladies amongst us!

Yep but Cornbrook has allowed the line to open early, I must admit though had capacity been available at Deansgate-Castlefield that would have been a more logical turnback, knowing Manchester though who knows what might happen.

When I use the airport line and if I am travelling to/from the city to avoid standing on Cornbrook station which has to be one of the worst located stations in the country for shelter from the elements I will use the airport tram to St Wherbergs Road and then change there for the tram to Rochdale that will take me straight into the city centre and not having to alight at Cornbrook.

On the journey home I do the same two trips but I reverse.
