Tram and Car in collision in Sheffield

A tram and a car had a minor collision at the junction of Park Grange Road and Arbourthorne Road on Wednesday 8th February during the morning rush hour causing minor delays for Stagecoach Supertram services. The tram was running on the Purple route between Herdings Park and Cathedral when the low speed collision took place. There were no injuries reported and damage sustained was said to be minor.

Busy Balloon cars

Despite the Blackpool tramway being closed to public services over the winter period,
there has been a surprisingly large amount of work for some of the operational trams, particularly the iconic ‘Balloon’ class, with several examples performing a variety of duties recently. As well as testing the infrastructure, car 701 has recently travelled along the promenade after spending the last few months inside the new depot at Starr Gate.

Snow stops play for Crich Tramway Village

Adverse weather conditions have unfortunately delayed the reopening of the Crich Tramway Village for the 2012 season. The Derbyshire attraction was due to begin another year of operations this weekend, on 11th February, but heavy snowfalls in Crich village over the last few days mean that this will not be possible after all. The situation will be reviewed during the coming week, and hopefully a positive announcement will see the tramway back in action before the February half-term week is over.

Royal seal of approval for Blackpool’s new trams

Tuesday 7th February 2012 was a notable day for the Blackpool tramway as for the first time this year, a tram carried passengers along the promenade! As if that wasn’t interesting enough, the tram in question was carrying a Royal passenger, in what was believed to have been only the fifth Royal tram ride in the entire history of the system.

671 goes back to Blackpool

This week has seen a few further tram arrivals and departures in Blackpool, as two long-term stored cars have left the seaside town for a fresh start in Merseyside, whilst another has returned to the Fylde coast after a surprisingly brief time away. The returning tram is Towing car 671, which had been sold to Merseytravel and was moved away to storage at Knowsley on 19th December 2011. This tram has now returned to Blackpool after being acquired by the Lancastrian Transport Trust.

The latest tram moves are probably the most confusing so far and will no doubt be the subject of much gossip, but in the absence of much detail we will stick to what is known for certain. Late last year, the LTT announced a deal with Merseytravel to acquire car 671 for preservation in its 1960 condition with flat ends, but as a single car as it had run for a while without its trailer when newly rebuilt. In return, two trams which the Trust had acquired to use for spare parts, Brush Railcoach 637 and Trailer 687, were given to Merseytravel. Soon after the swap was announced, all details of the deal were removed from the Trust’s websites, so when 671 moved to Knowsley in Merseyside a few weeks later, it was widely assumed that the deal had fallen through and that all three trams would remain with their original buyers.

However, on 6th February 2012, Brush car 637 left Blackpool and travelled to Knowsley. Once the tram was unloaded, the team from Scott’s Heavy Haulage loaded 671 onto the same lorry and transported the tram back to Blackpool. Despite the lorry and its precious cargo being parked overnight on Blundell Street, they then made another short journey to a nearby coach yard where 671 was placed on concrete. Sadly the tram is again stored outside, but at least now it is classed as a preserved tram and will hopefully have a brighter future ahead of it.

That wasn’t the end of the movements though, as the low loader then headed back to Rigby Road to collect trailer 687. Regular followers of the Blackpool tramway will no doubt recall that this tram has been stored in the depot since 2004, and has been heavily stripped since its coupled partner 677 was used in the Western Train restoration project, with its remains eventually being broken up. 687 has been spared this fate, for now at least, and it too has gone to Knowsley for outside storage, leaving Blackpool on Tuesday 7th February and reaching its new home later that same day. This means that Merseytravel now have two trailers and two Brush Railcoaches stored there, with a third Brush car – 626 – also in their hands, but housed undercover at Birkenhead. It is not known what plans exist for 687, but as an unpowered trailer which has been stripped of all of its seating and lost various other parts since it last ran, it will take a considerable amount of
effort and money to turn this shell into a working tram. However, the deal seems to give both 637 and 671 better prospects – although of course Merseytravel will have to wait to find out whether their ambitions to take over the Birkenhead heritage tramway are successful before developing any further plans for their new acquisitions.

Bye bye Blackpool for Brush car 637

Brush Railcoach 637 has become the latest tram to leave Blackpool for good after being sold following a lengthy period in storage at Rigby Road. The tram left the seaside town on
Monday 6th February, having last run in passenger service way back in September 2004. 637 has kept its imaginative all-over advert livery for Blackpool Zoo since its last repaint in the summer of 1998, and is now one of the last few trams to retain a hand-painted advert.

In Pictures: Centenary Cars in their new homes

As reported a few weeks ago two Centenary Cars have recently left Blackpool for new lives with 644 now at Farmer Parrs Animal World and 643 at the Broadwater Caravan Park. By chance these trams are still only 200 metres apart from each other as these two places are just across the road!

Flexity 003 makes it six in Blackpool

The delivery of Blackpool’s new tramcars continues following the delivery of Flexity2
tram 003
to the new Starr Gate depot complex early on Saturday 4th February. This tram had been in residence at the manufacturer’s Derby premises for a few weeks, hopefully in an attempt to investigate some of the technical faults that have affected its sisters already in Blackpool.

Sheffield 330 returns to service

The operational works car fleet at Crich Tramway Village has been boosted by one
now that Sheffield 330, a railgrinder and water car, has been commissioned for use. The tram had last operated in 2010, but the car has been looking increasingly tired in recent years, and so the fitting of rail scrubbing equipment to Cardiff 131 allowed 330 to be retired. However, with the Welsh car currently at Blackpool, there was a need for another works car to fulfil its duties in preparation for the Museum re-opening this month, and so 330 has been made available.

Boat 607 could light up Crich

Further details of the Tramway Museum Society’s plans for Blackpool ‘Boat’ car 607
– to be known by its original fleet number of 236 on arrival at Crich – have been confirmed in the latest edition of the TMS Journal, which is distributed every three months to members of the Society. Subject to the success of an appeal for donations towards the project, it is hoped that the tram will receive a few extra embellishments which will potentially make a surefire crowd pleaser look even more attractive.

First Flexity of 2012 reaches Blackpool

After a lengthy gap, the latest of Blackpool’s new supertrams finally arrived in town on Thursday 2nd February. This was also the first Flexity2 tram to be delivered to Blackpool in 2012, with the tram being unloaded outside the new Starr Gate depot during the afternoon and then being shunted inside to be prepared for operation. As per usual, the car landed at Hull docks and was then transported on a very long low-loader in one piece to its final destination.

Twin set 673+683 update

Late last year, British Trams Online published a news article on the departure of Twin
Set 673+683
from Blackpool. It may be recalled that 673 moved to temporary storage at Kirkham Prison in December 2011, whilst 683 transferred to outdoor storage in Fleetwood. This led to suggestions that the trams were owned by the Friends of Fleetwood Trams, however we have since been informed that this is not the case. In fact the trams remain in private ownership, and are merely on loan to the FoFT, who will hopefully display the Twin car set in their museum at Copse Road when this opens to the public.
