Nearly there! The work to finish the overhead wiring on the Blackpool Tramway extension from Talbot Square, along Talbot Road to a new terminus close to Blackpool North Railway is starting to reach an end with the last few days having seen further progress within the old Wilko’s site.

Free late night trams back for Hogmanay in Edinburgh

Edinburgh Trams have confirmed that they will again be operating free late night trams between midnight on 31st December and 0500 on 1st January between West End and Edinburgh Airport to help people get back from the Hogmanay celebrations in the city centre.

Preferred route for Luas Finglas extension revealed

A planned extension of Dublin’s Luas Green Line between Broombridge and Charlestown via Finglas – known as Luas Finglas – has moved a step closer after a Preferred Route was unveiled as part of a major consultation exercise. The extension will see four new stops added to the already extensive network and will mainly constructed in grass track.

Edinburgh Gateway tramstop reaches 5 years

11th December marks five years since the only additional stop to be added to the Edinburgh Trams network (so far!) first opened to passengers. Edinburgh Gateway was designed to provide a smooth transition between the tram network and rail network with trains on the Fife Circle line and services out to Perth, Dundee and Inverness all calling at the railway station and allowing passengers to change to head to the Airport on the tram.

Teenager taken to hospital after being hit by tram in Ashton

A male teenager has been taken to hospital with serious injuries after being hit by a tram close to Ashton Moss tramstop on the Ashton-under-Lyne line on Thursday 9th December. The incident happened shortly after 1700 with a large emergency services presence on the scene. Greater Manchester Police have appealed for witnesses into the incident as part of their ongoing investigation.

In Pictures: Reindeer lose in Edinburgh!

As we reported a few days ago, Edinburgh Trams are getting into the Christmas spirit by naming a few of their trams after reindeer whilst also giving them some antlers at the same time! This is a return to what used to happen before you know what happened and as in 2019 it would seem to be two reindeer a tram with a different name carried at each end.

West Midlands Metro update given but no start date yet confirmed

It has now been four weeks since passenger services last ran on the West Midlands Metro and an update has now been given on how things are progressing towards a resumption of services although its not yet known exactly when this may be. The original announced on 12th November said that it would be “at least four weeks” before there was a return of services and with this four week having now elapsed the first formal public statement has been made giving details of progress.

In Pictures: Tram back in Birmingham City Centre – for new ITV detective drama

Whilst there has yet to be an announcement about the return of passenger trams on West Midlands Metro (the initial “at least four week” runs out at the end of tomorrow), Thursday 9th December did see a tram out in Birmingham City Centre but it wasn’t under test or driver training in preparation for a return as it was hired for a filming assignment! Urbos3 28 was the chosen tram and was used for filming in connection with forthcoming ITV detective drama DI Ray.

Edinburgh Trams to join in with Christmas Jumper Day

Friday 10th December will be Christmas Jumper Day again in 2021 with the aim being to raise as much money as possible for Save the Children to help children get the food, healthcare and education they need to take on the world. In Pictures: Saltburn Cliff Lift

Originally opening in 1884 the Saltburn Cliff Lift is the oldest water balanced funicular which is still operational in Great Britain. It links the town of Saltburn with the only pleasure pier on the whole North East and Yorkshire coast with a journey from top to bottom taking just short of a minute. As with many other cliff lifts in the UK it considers itself a tramway and is known as the Saltburn Cliff Tramway on official literature. It has undergone much renovation over the years the latest of which came in 2017/18 when £400,000 was invested into a major refurbishment. But these photos come before that refurb with Keith Chadbourne paying a visit in August 2014.
