In Pictures: Trams see the light of day at Beamish

Our recent articles from Beamish have all been concentrating on the trackworks which have been taking place over the past few months with the trams not getting much of a look in, hardly surprising when they’ve not been able to run since the start of January. But early March has seen some trams make an appearance outside of the depot ahead of electricians coming to install new wiring and lighting. Not only has this seen complete trams outside but also the rare move of Gateshead 52 into the main depot. Trevor Hall captured the following images.

Update on Supertram temporary timetable as disruption set to end next week

Since the start of service on Monday 10th March 2025, South Yorkshire Supertram services on the Blue and Yellow routes have been operating to a revised timetable. At the time of the announcement it was said this was due to additional maintenance and this has now been confirmed as being to the trams.

In Pictures: Yes, there is more progress on West Midlands Metro Black Country line!

Its become a familiar sentence we have been writing a lot over the past few months but that’s because its true – excellent progress continues to be made on construction work in connection with the next West Midlands Metro extension, the Black Country line. We’ve seen track being laid, stops being constructed and overhead support masts going in and now in this latest update from Andy Walters we see further progress in preparation for the stringing of the overhead in the future.

Nexus submit bid for major upgrade of Metro signalling

Nexus have submitted a bid to the Department for Transport for funding to completely replace the signalling system on the Tyne and Wear Metro. The business case – which has the backing of North East Mayor, Kim McGuiness – was originally submitted to the government in late 2024 and after review by the DfT transport board has been endorsed to move on to next phase of the development process.

In these photos – all taken on Wednesday 5th March 2025 – we look across from the railway platforms to see trams passing through, which included some from Ashton-under-Lyne which were being diverted this way and going to Crumpsall owing to city centre engineering works.

Funding in doubt for Wirral Transport Museum?

In a story published on the Wirral Globe website under the headline “Transport museum and ferry village plans reportedly in jeopardy” doubt has been expressed that the previously earmarked funding for the wider project around Woodside Ferry, which includes the development of Wirral Transport Museum, will now be available with the local council considering diverting it to other projects.

Supertram introduces official body camera policy for conductors

The wearing of body cameras by all conductors on the South Yorkshire Supertram network is now mandatory following the introduction of a new policy by management. Body worn cameras had been introduced in autumn 2023 as a pilot but following the success of this it has now been decided to make it compulsory.

In Pictures: London Trams 2547 back in service

The London Trams network have another tram to call on for service again after 2547 returned to service on Friday 7th March 2025. The Bombardier built CR4000 had been out of service long-term with its last recorded use being on 20th February 2019 – over six years ago which actually makes Metrolink 3027’s recent return to service look speedy!

New carriage wash commissioned at Gosforth Depot

Trains on the Tyne and Wear Metro network should have that extra sparkle next time you see them following the commissioning of an all new carriage wash at Gosforth Depot which can be used by both the old and new trains. The installation of the new facility is just one part of the £70 million rebuild of the depot complex in preparation for the introduction of the new state of the art trains being built by Stadler.

It is in fact because existing advertisers obviously consider it to be an excellent way to promote their products as they keep on renewing contracts which then sees revised adverts being applied to trams. West Midlands Metro bounces back to pre-Covid passenger numbers

Transport for West Midlands and West Midlands Metro are celebrating the return of passenger numbers on the network to pre-Covid passenger numbers following the release of the latest statistics from the Department for Transport (which actually took place in September 2024, although staffing numbers were revised at the end of February 2025 which seems to have given a nudge to celebrate the numbers!). The year to the end of March 2024 saw over 8 million journeys recorded on the network – its highest number ever.

Old(er) and New – West Midlands Metro: Wolverhampton St George’s

This may be a bit of a cheat but we continue with the “Old(er) and New” series by heading to the now West Midlands Metro and former Midland Metro system. The premise of the series remains the same as we go to the same location on the network and view something old and something new, but whereas when in Blackpool it was a heritage tram and a modern tram for the West Midlands Metro its one of the first generation of the modern trams – the T69s – and one of the newer CAF built trams which are featured. We start off at the end of the original line – and somewhere which currently sees no trams, old or new.
