Two incidents in one evening combine to cause major Metrolink disruption

The evening of Wednesday 2nd November saw two incidents on the Manchester Metrolink system leading to major disruption on both the Eccles and Ashton lines. Whilst this would usually be one service impacted with trams running between Ashton and Eccles, with the temporary timetable in place at the moment it meant that trams between Eccles and Deansgate-Castlefield and from Ashton to Crumpsall were affected.

Late evening Supertram changes on 6th November

No Stagecoach Supertram services will run beyond Cathedral after 2100 on Sunday 6th November to allow for essential engineering works to take place on West Street. Both the Blue and Yellow routes will be affected by this change.

Strikes back on in Edinburgh after part of deal removed

It looked for a time during the summer that the Edinburgh Festival would see a disrupted tram service after a dispute erupted over a pay deal for staff on the tram network. But after negotiations – which included a pay rise of between 6.5% and 11% – the threat was averted with Unite union members at the company voting heavily in favour of accepting this offer. However, it now looks like strikes are back on with allegations from the union that part of the deal has now been removed by Edinburgh Trams management.

Luas Engineering Works in November

In Pictures: Track and bridges on WMM Dudley extension

A lot of the news recently on the West Midlands Metro extension from Wednesbury to (eventually, subject to funding) Brierley Hill has been about the “re-phasing” of the project which has seen the section from Dudley to Brierley Hill delayed due to a lack of funding. But the section which is scheduled to open in 2024 – from Wednesbury to Dudley Town Centre – has also been seeing some significant progress with track continuing to go down in Dudley whilst as we reported earlier this month a new bridge is being installed on Sedgley Road. This update with photos from Andy Walters shows some of the more recent work which has been taking place.

Consultation launched to give passengers a chance to shape the future of the Metro

Passengers who use the Tyne and Wear Metro are to be given an opportunity to shape the future of the network with a new consultation being launched in conjunction with Newcastle University’s Open Lab. This builds on the consultation carried out in 2020 to hone the design of the new Metro train fleet and will allow people to have their say on fares, timetables, ticketing options, accessibility and security.

In Pictures: New tram depot at Carlton Colville continues to take shape

The East Anglia Transport Museum in Carlton Colville is probably currently home to the biggest heritage tram infrastructure project – the construction of a new tram depot and eventual extension to the tramway. Work on the new tram depot started at the end of June 2022 and now into October and excellent progress is being made on the structure.

Tramlink ASLEF members to be re-balloted over latest pay offer

ASLEF members who are drivers at London Tramlink are set to be re-balloted over further potential industrial action. The re-ballot has been done as part of legislation which requires new ballots every six months (or every nine with employers agreement) but with members still unhappy with the offer on the table it is fully expected they will vote for more strikes later this year.

Complaints from rugby fans over Edinburgh Trams service

Ever since the Edinburgh Trams system opened in May 2014 one of its biggest positives has been how it can move large crowds of people quickly and efficiently to big events – especially those taking place at BT Murrayfield Stadium. In what has been a well oiled system of services running up to every 3 minutes before and after rugby matches hundreds of people have been quickly moved from the city centre to the stadium. Unfortunately, on Saturday 29th October – the first of the Autumn Rugby Internationals – things didn’t go as smoothly as usual with complaints of delays.

Another delay for trams to Wolverhampton Railway Station

One to file under the “not really a surprise” category – it has been announced that the West Midlands Metro extension to Wolverhampton Railway Station has been delayed once more with trams now not expected to run until “Spring 2023”. The latest estimate had been Autumn 2022 but due to “unforeseen supply chain constraints” a further delay is now expected – it had originally been hoped it would open in 2020.

NET performance suffers over a challenging summer

The reliability and punctuality on Nottingham Express Transit fell to its lowest levels for at least a year over the summer as a number of challenges led to issues with service performance. The high temperatures experienced plus supply chain issues are both blamed for the reduction in performance across the network.

Metro Flow project reaches halfway point – and remains on schedule

The project to dual 4.6km of track on the Tyne and Wear Metro in South Tyneside has reached its halfway point with the works remaining on schedule. 3km of new line has now been laid with a further 1.6km to follow over the coming weeks – the project is due to be completed by 4th December.
