Saturday 12th September 2026 was a momentous day at the National Tramway Museum as Blackpool Centenary 645 had its official launch following its conversion into a new Access Tram. While it may not be a full blown restoration to original condition the work on 645 is probably one of the most important projects to have come out of the workshops at Crich in recent years and will now mean that everyone can get on board a tram when they visit the museum.

UKTram submit response to Mass Transit Taskforce

Earlier this year the UK government announced the creation of a Mass Transit Taskforce and so far the group has been collecting evidence from various stakeholders across the country. One such stakeholder is UKTram who have confirmed they have submitted evidence where they have outlined recommendations to help the UK deliver mass transit schemes more efficiently and sustainability.

Blackpool Transport confirm their commitment to heritage trams

After the various reports online at the start of September about the future of heritage tram operation in Blackpool, Blackpool Transport have now affirmed their commitment in a new press release. Whilst much in the release has been covered in these recent reports there is some new information and a confirmation that they are working on two of the town’s iconic illuminated trams to allow them to be displayed during Lightpool this October.

Increase in fares on Luas from January 2027

The National Transport Authority (NTA) have announced a series of changes to the national fare structure for Public Service Obligation (PSO) services across Ireland, including services on Dublin’s Luas network. The new structure will be introduced from January 2027 and will see increases in adult fares by an average of 15%, although this still represents a reduction in the cost of travel when compared to eight years ago.

New art project commemorates Childhood Cancer Awareness Month

The latest art project to be found on the Tyne and Wear Metro at Tynemouth station is commemorating Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. The art work is located in the station’s Bridge Gallery and features a connecting chain of lab coats to symbolise the role of researchers, and the key breakthroughs in children’s cancer research over recent decades.

Heaton Park Tramway announce final Museum open day of 2026

In Pictures: Flexity2 trams return to service in Blackpool

Wednesday 9th September 2026 saw two of the medium-term absentees on the Blackpool Tramway return to service following the completion of work at Starr Gate Depot. 001 and 017 were the two trams which made a return to action and they are set to be joined by other classmates very soon. All this comes after the improvement notice issued earlier this year was marked as complied on the ORR website.

Will West Midlands Metro reach Dudley on 1st November?

The official word from the West Midlands Combined Authority and Transport for West Midlands still remains “autumn 2026” and no actual date will be announced publicly until testing and driver training is completed but the Leader of Dudley Council, Cllr Patrick Harley, has again gone public with a date for the opening of the first phase of the Black Country Line. According to recent reports he has been told that the line will open as far as Dudley on 1st November 2026 – the same date as the new bus station is due to open.

Revised Metrolink timetable from 14th September

Manchester Metrolink have announced that they will be introducing a new revised timetable from 14th September. This won’t be a return to the 12-minute frequency on all lines – although they are still working towards that being implemented again in the future – but will see a change to service patterns, including additional “peak” trams on some routes.
