Chesterfield 7 returns to service at Crich

Whilst the majority of trams which have carried passengers at the Crich Tramway Village so far in 2024 were part of the operating fleet at times last year, the latest tram to be used for the first time does not fall into that category. That is Chesterfield 7 which, as we saw recently, had been in the Workshop for preparation for use and it was fully commissioned in time to be used on Wednesday 8th May 2024.

Timetable and first details announced for Blackpool’s May Event Weekend

Things on Blackpool Heritage Tram Tours will be different in 2024 with available trams being based out at Starr Gate Depot whilst the results of the Rigby Road condition survey are awaited. This means that Event/Enhanced Weekends will see fewer trams in service with the first of these due to take place over the Spring Bank Holiday Weekend Saturday 25th to Monday 27th May.

Major rail replacement works announced for Supertram

There will be major changes for services on the South Yorkshire Supertram network later this month and stretching into June as a programme of rail replacement gets underway. Whilst this first phase of work will only see changes to the tram service between Saturday 25th May and Sunday 2nd June (coinciding with the May half term holidays) its also been confirmed that there will be more works to come over the summer.

3116 swaps adverts in Manchester

There is another new advert to be seen on the Manchester Metrolink system after 3116 received new vinyls for Sephora. This replaces its previous advert for the National Trust and is a major change as it goes from lots of colours to being black and white!

In Pictures: Horseley Road stop on West Midlands Metro Dudley extension

Construction work on the Dudley and Brierley Hill extension of the West Midlands Metro has been continuing in recent weeks with activity at various locations along the line. One of those locations has been in and around where Horseley Road tramstop will be constructed and that’s where we head in this article.

London Trams strikes over – but service now disrupted by wheel damage

Article updated 10/05/2024 with details of further service changes

The first of two planned strikes by Unite the Union members at London Trams is now over which should have meant that as from Thursday 9th May a normal service resumed across the network. However, that has not been the case as there have been severe delays with trams suffering from damage to their wheels.

The most recent meeting of the UKTram Owners and Operators Group was in Nottingham where members were given a tour of the tram depot at Wilkinson Street. This allowed members to get an in-depth insight into challenges faced by the NET and the steps its taking to meet them.

In Pictures: Driver familiarisation continues on Blackpool Tramway extension

In just over six weeks time a full passenger service will be in operation on the (admittedly much delayed) Blackpool Tramway extension along Talbot Road to a terminus by North Station. In the lead up testing and now driver familiarisation is underway in preparation for this service to officially launch on Sunday 16th June 2024. Peter Dockerty saw two trams in action on the line on this visit.

Overhead line damage at Old Trafford leads to Metrolink disruption

Manchester Metrolink services to Altrincham were suspended on Wednesday 8th May following “third party” overhead line damage at Old Trafford. The first reports of the problem were first made around 1230 with warnings that the service would remain disrupted at least until at least the evening.

Heaton Park Tramway to reopen 15th June

It may be later than originally hoped the 2024 season at Manchester’s Heaton Park Tramway will get underway on Saturday 15th June. The news has been confirmed by the tramway’s official Facebook page and the announcement comes just a few days after testing was able to start.

More Transport Trust Red Wheels unveiled

For over 15 years the Transport Trust have been recognising the transport history of the UK with their “Red Wheel” scheme. Similar to the familiar blue plaques seen on buildings across the country, the idea of the “Red Wheel” scheme is to commemorate Britain’s rich and globally important legacy in the development of transport. All aspects of transport are covered and some more recent plaques are helping to celebrate the history of trams and light rail.

The variety of trams available for service at the Crich Tramway Village continues to increase with Blackpool 167 the latest to be used for the first time in 2024. The Pantograph car entered service on Thursday 2nd May when it was part of the standard three car service offered as part of a visit to Crich.

Edinburgh Trams up for another award

The successful launch of services to Newhaven has led to Edinburgh Trams being nominated for an award at the prestigious Chartered Institution of Highways & Transportation (CIHT) awards. Members of the Edinburgh Trams Service Delivery department have received a nomination for the Team of the Year Award, with the winner to be announced at a ceremony in London on 13th June.

Heaton Park Tramway edges towards reopening

Following the completion of repairs to the substation, the Heaton Park Tramway is coming close to reopening for the season with testing and crew re-familiarisation now underway. Although no date has been set just yet for passenger services to recommence this is an important and positive step towards it.

Having been launched to much fun fare at Easter, the Fylde Transport Trust’s Blackpool Brush Railcoach 634 continues to be used on a regular basis at the East Anglia Transport Museum. In this pictorial article we head back to Carlton Colville to see the tram running again – its partner in service on Sunday 21st April was Sheffield 513 as caught on camera by Bryan Grint.
