In Pictures: Birmingham 107

The chances are that if you think of preserved first generation Birmingham trams your first thought will be of 585 located at the Thinktank Museum in the city centre. However, there is another tram from the city in the Greater Birmingham area with the surviving parts of 107 being found at the Aston Manor Road Transport Museum. A recent open day afforded Ken Jones the chance to capture the following images of the tram.

In Pictures: Car on tracks again causes Metrolink delays

On Saturday 5th May Manchester Metrolink services on the Airport route were disrupted after a car managed to drive along the tracks just to the city side of Sale Water Park on the bridge which crosses the River Mersey. The car had managed to drive quite some distance on the tram only section before it had become stuck causing an obstruction.

In Pictures: Llandudno & Colwyn Bay 7 at the Victorian Extravaganza

The Llandudno & Colwyn Bay Electric Railway Society’s replica tramcar no. 7 was once again out in public over the May Day Bank Holiday weekend with it both on display at the Victoria Extravaganza and also taking part in the daily parade of vintage vehicles. These photos of 7 were taken on Saturday 5th May when the tram was unable to take part in the Parade because of issues with the Matador lorry used to transport the tram around the local area. In Pictures: Stockport 5 returns home for a day!

Saturday 5th May saw Stockport 5 head back to its home town for display during the Stockport Community Rail Festival. Departing and arriving back at Heaton Park on the same day the move was in the reliable hands of Allely’s with 5 remaining on the low loader throughout the day situated outside Stockport Railway Station.

A talk on Public Transport in Aberdeen

On Monday 14th May a special talk on public transport in Aberdeen will take place at Aberdeen Central Library including sections on the horse and electric trams which once ran in the city. Starting at 1800 and continuing until 1930, local transport historian Keith Jones will talk about the history of the city’s tramways from the earliest lines in 1874 until closure in 1958 and then onto the expansion of the bus network from the 1920s and a look at the changes which have taken place over the past 60 years. In Pictures: New Just Eat adverts on Metrolink

Having two trams in identical vinyl wrap adverts seems to be in vogue on UK tramways at the moment with Manchester Metrolink joining Stagecoach Supertram in the blub. This time the advertiser is Just Eat – who also advertise on Nottingham Express Transit 210 – whose distinctive colour scheme now adorns 3039 and 3085.

Leeds 180 back in service

Following a fairly short absence, Leeds 180 is now back in the operational fleet at Crich Tramway Village having received some essential workshop attention over the past winter. With the work now completed and a period of test running proving satisfactory, the tram was used in passenger service for the first time this year on Friday 4th May, when it performed superbly.

In Pictures: Grampian Transport Museum & its trams

The Grampian Transport Museum in Alford, near Aberdeen, has an impressive display of vehicles with a concentration on cars and bikes although there is also enough to keep the tram enthusiast happy as well in the form of two trams. During 2017 one of these trams – Aberdeen horse car 1 – made a trip back home to Aberdeen for a short spell but is now back in pride of place at Alford where it can be seen alongside Cruden Bay Tramway 2. Keith Chadbourne made a recent visit to the museum and the following photos show the trams in situ.

Volks Electric Railway 10 back in Brighton

The third and final Volks Electric Railway train to have been overhauled by Alan Keef Ltd has returned to Brighton and now awaits final work to be completed and a return to service. 10 was delivered on Monday 30th April and joins the previously overhauled 4 and 6 back in situ on the south coast.

Newhaven extension consultation closes

The 6 week consultation into plans to extend Edinburgh Trams along Leith Walk to Newhaven has closed with more than 3,000 people having either attended one of the information events, sent their comments in by email or completed the consultation online. The Trams to Newhaven project team will now consider the feedback received and re-examine the plans before publishing them for more consultation at the end of the summer.

New sculptures unveiled at Crich

Over the weekend of 28th and 29th April five new contemporary sculptures were unveiled at the Crich Tramway Village. Created by artistic duo Musson+Retallick the sculptures – to be known as Conversations and Memories – are a permanent installation and are a legacy to the tramway men, woman and their families whose lives were lost or changed by the Great War.

In Pictures: Royal Highland Show tram in Edinburgh

As mentioned briefly earlier this week a tram has again received adverts for the Royal Highland Show with 276 the chosen tram this year for this role. The advert is a revised design for 2018 and urges people to take the tram to the show, which takes place at the Royal Highland Centre between 21st and 24th June. Trams will be running up to every three minutes during the event which is just a short walk away from Ingliston Park and Ride tramstop.

Target date set for Birkenhead museum re-opening

After a long winter closure for refurbishment, work to improve the visitor displays at the Birkenhead tramway’s museum and depot premises at Taylor Street is now almost complete. Volunteers are hard at work to complete some final snagging before the building can re-open to visitors, and a provisional date for the grand re-opening has been set for Saturday 26th May.

In Pictures: Blackpool 626 sighted at docks!

Blackpool Brush Railcoach 626 has become the latest of the many Blackpool trams which were sold off at the time of the tramway upgrade, to be moved to a new home recently. Unfortunately, having remained undercover ever since leaving Rigby Road behind it in 2010, the tram has now found itself in outside storage – although this is believed to only be temporary.
