In Pictures: Edinburgh Trams engineering works September 2025

For three days at the end of September 2025, Edinburgh Trams was split into two as essential engineering works took place on the points at West End (Shandwick Place). No trams ran between Haymarket and Picardy Place on Saturday 27th, Sunday 28th and Monday 29th September to allow the works to take place and in this article we take a look at some of the temporary arrangements in place.

For all three days services continued to run from Airport to Haymarket and then from Picardy Place to Newhaven. There was ticket acceptance in place on various bus services to ensure people could continue to complete their journeys across the city although warnings were given not to use Tap On, Tap Off if using the buses and the validators at West End, Princes Street and St Andrew Square were all covered so no-one could be tempted to try to use them!

Towards the end of the three day closure and much of the work has been done with the points replaced and the work crew now tidying the area up again.

Haymarket became a terminus for three days and in this view we see 255 having just terminated with a service from the Airport. A stop sign is in place in the distance so the tram can’t go any further into the city. Shortly afterwards, the tram started back to the airport on the same track, then went into the loop at Haymarket Yards, before it rejoined the eastbound track and then went over the crossover to the westbound track.

We then see 255 as it performs the special manoeuvre at Haymarket Yards. It has run wrong line from Haymarket and now goes into the loop from where it will return to the wrong line before using the crossover and then heading back east to the Airport. (All Photographs by Roy Calderwood)
