New LRSSB podcast looks at work of confidential safety hotline

The latest edition of the LRSSB’s “Let’s Talk Light Rail” podcast has been released and highlights the increasingly important role of an independent organisation that enables light rail employees to report their safety concerns without fear of repercussions.

In episode 8 of the podcast, Sue Gray, Marketing Lead and Stakeholder Manager at CIRAS, outlines the history of the confidential hotline for the transport industry and the scope of its current work.

Sue also explains that the approach taken by the organisation allows employers to focus on issues rather than individuals. This means employees have the peace of mind knowing they can report any health, safety, or welfare concerns without worrying that they or anyone else will be singled out for their actions or labelled as a troublemaker.

Carly Swift, LRSSB Marketing and Communications Manager, hosts the podcast again and is also joined by Craig O’Brien, LRSSB Head of Engineering and Safety, who explains how the LRSSB and CIRAS are building an ever closer working relationship. They are analysing data from a sector wide risk model to see if some safety concerns are under-reported, and a how a willingness to speak up can be embedded in light rail culture.
