Concerns raised over Tramlink Nottingham’s latest financial losses

Concerns have been raised about the viability of the operator of Nottingham Express Transit, Tramlink Nottingham, after reports in the Nottingham Post revealed significant losses were posted in the most recent financial year. Despite the large losses – said to be £50 million – both Tramlink Nottingham and Nottingham City Council have said the figures are where they would expect them to be.

A project which is looking to further drive professionalism across the light rail sector has reached a major milestone with the publication of new National Occupational Standards (NOS) for roles in tram and tramway engineering. These are now available for organisations who operate in the sector to help provide a benchmark across the industry.

Contractor appointed for track dualling project on Tyne and Wear Metro

Buckingham Group Contracting Limited has won a tender worth £55 million to dual three key sections of track between Pelaw and Bede, creating the capacity for an extra 24,000 passenger journeys each day on the Tyne and Wear Metro. This is a major part of the Metro Flow project which will help to increase service frequency, cut journey times and improve reliability on the network.

Blackpool Tramway extension to see disruption on Promenade service

Work to complete the construction of the Blackpool Tramway extension up Talbot Road to a new terminus at Blackpool North Railway Station is to get underway once again this month and works at Talbot Square will see a disruption of services on the current Promenade tramway from Monday 24th May.

Trams to Newhaven project remains on time and budget but changes to construction programme announced

A recent update from the Trams to Newhaven project has confirmed that they continue to work towards a completion date of Spring 2023 and that it remains within the agreed £207.3 million budget. However, following delays in the construction so far (partly, but not exclusively, due to Covid) a revised construction programme has now been announced which will see the extension of works in some sections.

In Pictures: Buses back at Beamish – trams still over three months away!

Monday 17th May saw the return of normal transport operation at Beamish with a bus service now able to run around the museum site again. While the buses are now back running it remains a different story for the trams with no change to the plans that a Circular Tour service will resume from 4th September. A leading independent study has found that an in-built ventilation system on Manchester Metrolink’s M5000 trams helps to limit the risk of aerosol transmission of viruses, such as Covid-19. The system constantly circulates fresh air around the tram.

Twilight Trams return to the Seaton Tramway for 2021!

Out of all the disruption we saw during 2020 there was one positive development at the Seaton Tramway in Devon – the operation of Twilight Trams. And now as 2021 continues to evolve it has been confirmed that they will run again this summer with the opportunity of taking a tram ride through the Axe Valley after dark.

Hillsborough Corner engineering work over the Spring Bank Holiday weekend

This article has been corrected since original publication.

Engineering works on the track at Hillsborough Corner throughout the Spring Bank Holiday weekend (29th to 31st May) means that no trams will be running to either Middlewood or Malin Bridge for those three days. During this period trams on the Yellow route (from Meadowhall) will all terminate at Shalesmoor with those on the Blue route (from Halfway) will either run to Cathedral or Shalesmoor.

Week long partial closure of West Midlands Metro on the way

This article has been updated since original publication.

There will be no trams running between Wednesbury Parkway and Wolverhampton St George’s for a week between Saturday 29th May and Sunday 6th June to allow for Wolverhampton City Council to demolish a bridge in Bilston. During this work a normal tram service will only be able to run between the Library in Birmingham City Centre and Wednesbury Parkway.
