Light Rail Operators Committee meet in Nottingham

Thursday 4th December 2025 saw the latest meeting of UKTram’s Light Rail Operators Committee (LROC) take place at Nottingham Express Transit’s depot at Wilkinson Street. This saw operators meet to discuss operational performance, shared challenges and best practice.

Following a tour of NET’s Overspeed Monitoring system and the Control Room, a formal session was chaired by Vice Chair and Luas Control Room and Operations Manager, Graham Fitzgerald. This saw an overview of the Rail Intel platform and its growing role in supporting benchmarking and long-term planning across light rail networks.

There were discussions which reflected the shared priorities facing operators. Passenger demand and performance trends were reviewed, alongside the operational impact of infrastructure disruption. Workforce development featured strongly, with updates on apprenticeship initiatives, evolving driver training programmes and the role of learning platforms in building long-term capability across organisations.

Graham Fitzgerald said: “I was delighted to chair the UKTram Light Rail Operators Committee meeting on behalf of Transdev Ireland. As always, there was great attendance from light rail operators across the UK and Ireland. Nottingham was once again a fantastic host.’’

The day also saw members share progress on Control Room developments and safety systems, with discussion turning to timetable planning and the practical realities of introducing new technologies to strengthen monitoring and operational assurance. Recognition schemes and staff engagement initiatives were highlighted as playing an important role in sustaining morale and performance during periods of change.
