Week long partial closure of West Midlands Metro on the way

This article has been updated since original publication.

There will be no trams running between Wednesbury Parkway and Wolverhampton St George’s for a week between Saturday 29th May and Sunday 6th June to allow for Wolverhampton City Council to demolish a bridge in Bilston. During this work a normal tram service will only be able to run between the Library in Birmingham City Centre and Wednesbury Parkway.

The essential work being undertaken by the City of Wolverhampton Council is to demolish Arthur Street Bridge in Bilston which has started to show structural defects in recent years with engineers recommending its demolition for the safety of the Metro line. The bridge being demolished is the former road bridge which remained in situ when it was replaced by a pedestrian bridge during the original Metro construction works and with utilities which used to be carried on having recently been moved the chance is now being taken to remove the old bridge once and for all.

From Saturday 29th May to Sunday 6th June trams will continue to run at the current frequencies (up to every 6 minutes Monday-Friday, up to every 8 minutes Saturday and up to every 10 minutes on Sunday) but will terminate at Wednesbury Parkway when running from Library with no tram service north from there to Wolverhampton St George’s.

For passengers who wish to continue their journeys towards Wolverhampton there will be ticket acceptance on board the National Express West Midlands no. 79 and 79A bus service and West Midlands Railway services between Birmingham and Wolverhampton (except for Sunday 6th June when there are no train services either!).

Normal services all the way from Library to Wolverhampton St George’s should resume from Monday 7th June.

* In addition some additional engineering works have been announced for the evening of Thursday 20th May with no trams running between West Bromwich Central and Library after 2130. Described as essential maintenance work a normal tram service will continue to run from Wolverhampton St George’s to West Bromwich Central with anyone wishing to travel towards Birmingham guided towards either the no. 74 bus or West Midlands Railway services.
