Lockdown Walks: Manchester Metrolink 3090

Its time for a quick trip into Manchester City Centre for another edition of “Lockdown Walks”.

Throughout this series we have often mentioned the historic buildings which provide the backdrop for photos of trams in Edinburgh, but Edinburgh doesn’t have the monopoly on trams and historic buildings! The Midland Hotel opened in 1903 having been built by the Midland Railway to service Manchester Central Railway Station which was the northern terminus of their line from London St Pancras. Now a grade II* listed building it remains open as a hotel being operated under the Leonardo Hotels brand. It has recently undergone a £14 million renovation to bring it up to modern standards and remains at the higher end of the hotel market in the city.

In this photo we see 3090 heading out of the city and passed the Midland Hotel on the left. It may be nearly 118 years old but the hotel still dominates the scene around St Peter’s Square and Lower Mosley Street. (Photograph by Kate Meeson)
