Lockdown Walks: Edinburgh Trams 276

As we embark on another “Lockdown Walk” we head into Edinburgh City Centre for another view of Princes Street.

Princes Street is probably one of the most famous streets in the UK which now enjoys a tram service running down the middle of it, with the Edinburgh Trams line having opened in 2014 at the end of what we now know is the first phase of a tram network befitting a capital city. This wasn’t the first tramway to run along Princes Street of course as the original first generation tram system in the city also made extensive use of the thoroughfare. Today the road is not only served by the trams but also numerous bus routes, many of which are operated by Lothian Buses.

This photo shows 276 heading for the Airport having just crossed the junction with Frederick Street. Two significant things to mention on the left – one is Lothian Buses 551 with a special livery for Poppy Scotland and the other is the woman taking a photo. Could she be bemoaning the arrival of the tram blocking her view as she was taking a picture of the Old Town? She’s obviously determined to get her shot though as she is standing in the middle of the road as opposed to the central reservation! (Photograph by Roy Calderwood, 5th April 2021)
