Lisbon 730 update from Beamish

Back in January 2024 it was announced that Lisbon 730 was moved from the Wirral to Beamish where it was to become a permanent member of the operating fleet in the northeast to provide additional capacity amongst the trams. The tram moved on 22nd January and was soon moved into the depot ahead of a start on the tram being prepared for service.

Siemens Mobility receives Edinburgh Trams infrastructure maintenance contract extension

Siemens Mobility (in a joint consortium with Bilfinger UK) has been awarded an eleven year contract extension for the maintenance of infrastructure on the Edinburgh Trams network. The contract – worth £44.7 million – will now continue until 2035 following agreement.

Blackpool announce the chance to travel on the North Station extension before it officially opens!

Blackpool Transport and Blackpool Heritage Tram Tours have announced a series of special activities and packages available for people to travel on the North Station extension in the days leading up to its opening on Sunday 16th June. In the three days immediately before the opening of the extension there will the chance to travel on either a modern or heritage tram across the entire tramway, including the extension, as well as to see behind the scenes at Starr Gate Depot.

Nexus hand over £9000 charity donation after a year of fundraising

As with many large businesses across the UK, each year Nexus nominate a charity of the year with their employees fundraising throughout the year to raise money for the organisation. The 2023/4 charity for Nexus employees was Daft As A Brush Cancer Patient Care and recently a £9,600 cheque was handed at Newcastle Central station.

Tram allocations confirmed for Blackpool Event Weekend

As already mentioned on these pages, the Spring Bank Holiday weekend between Saturday 25th and Monday 27th May sees the first “Event Weekend” of 2024 in Blackpool. With a reduced number of trams available because of the ongoing issues at Rigby Road and the out-basing of heritage trams at Starr Gate it was always going to be different from previous hop-on, hop-off timetables but a variety of trams and trips will be offered.

In Pictures: New trains on test on Tyne and Wear Metro

As we reported earlier this month, Wednesday 15th May 2024 saw the start of daylight testing for the new Tyne and Wear Metro trains when 555 005 was let out in between the service on the coastal route between Newcastle and North Tyneside. The same unit has been out most weekdays since then as the testing continues and in this article we take our first look at the unit on test.

In Pictures: Blackpool 717 undertakes the Full System Tour

Sunday 5th May saw the first of two planned “Full System Tours” in Blackpool run. Balloon 717 was the tram chosen to undertake the special route across the tramway which saw it cover several parts of the tramway which it isn’t usually possible to have a ride on.

Nottingham Express Transit 232 heads off repairs

Trams on the back of low loaders is not exactly ground-breaking news with the West Midlands Metro in particular seemingly always sending their trams off somewhere or another. But the sight of a tram from Nottingham on a lorry is a bit more unusual which makes this story a little more exciting. The tram which has on the move recently has been Citadis 232.

Fleetwood Tram Sunday cancelled – and then its not!

A week may be a long time in politics but it also looks like a few days is a very long time in organising community based events! The Fleetwood Festival of Transport – aka Tram Sunday – was abruptly cancelled due to a lack of volunteers and then just a few days later it was all back on after a new event committee was formed.

Man jailed and banned from trams after conviction of sexual assault

Tahir Ali, aged 37 from Oldham, has been jailed for three years and banned from the Metrolink network following a conviction of sexual assault. He was found guilty of two counts of sexual assault following incidents involving a woman and a teenage girl on board trams.
