Tramlink Engineering Works: 4th-13th August

The summer of engineering works on English tramways continues with London Tramlink the latest to confirm details of their programme of renewal. The work will start on Friday 4th August and continue through until Sunday 13th August and is again impacting the Wimbledon to Therapia Lane section of the network.

NET Engineering Works to affect services this August

Nottingham Express Transit is the latest tramway to announce plans for engineering works this summer with rail replacement set to take place around The Forest. This is the first time these tracks have been dealt with since the system opened in 2004 and will lead to the network running in two sections for the duration of the works.

More trams for repairs at Dudley confirmed

As we’ve seen in recent weeks there has been a changing of the trams in Dudley as repairs of the West Midlands Metro Urbos3s continues, but we hadn’t had confirmation of which trams were now there, until now! The two latest trams can be confirmed as 33 and 35.

In Pictures: Trackwork continues on Supertram

As we saw last week a period of rail replacement work is now underway on Stagecoach Supertram with the Hillsborough area the focus of attention. Getting underway from Monday 24th July the works will be continuing until Sunday 6th August with four distinct phases taking place. These latest photos come from phase two which has been close to Hillsborough Interchange.

West Midlands Metro to trial dog travel on board trams

A three month trial allowing dogs to travel on board the West Midlands Metro (with owners!) is to start from 15th August after feedback from customers. Previously only assistance dogs were allowed to travel (although this has recently been extended to include dogs in secure carriers) but now for a trial period dogs will be allowed on the trams.

LRSSB to boost tramway safety with fresh focus on testing

The Light Rail Safety and Standards Board (LRSSB) have revealed that they are stepping up support for specialist training within light rail to help develop a further boost to safety, operational performance and the wellbeing of those working in the sector. They are working alongside sector professionals to identify appropriate courses and aims to provide them with access to practical information alongside open forums to allow best practice to be shared.

In Pictures: Information panel installed at Edinburgh Cable Tram wheels

Earlier this year, the City of Edinburgh Council unveiled two re-discovered former Cable Tramway pulley wheels to great fanfare. The wheels had been put in place at the junction between Iona Street and Leith Walk within view of the modern day tramway which runs past on a regular basis to show the public a piece of tramway history. At the time the wheels had been placed there with no context but, as promised, they have now added an information panel to explain more about them.

In Pictures: Eccles line track replacement on Metrolink

Summer is the season for major track renewal on UK tramways it would appear as not only is taking place in Sheffield (as reported earlier this week) but also on the Manchester Metrolink system. The work on Metrolink is the final stage of major work on the Eccles line which has seen several other lengthy closures in the past few years to replace the track, much of which was installed when the line opened 22 years ago.

TfL and Tram Operations Limited fined a total of £14 million over Tramlink accident

Transport for London (TfL) and operators of London Tramlink, Tram Operations Limited (TOL) have been fined a total of £14 million after admitting to health and safety breaches at the Central Criminal Court (the Old Bailey). The decision to prosecute was taken by the Office of Road and Rail (ORR) and comes a few months after the driver of the tram, Alfred Dorris, was cleared of charges against him.

Luas Engineering Works: Saturday 5th to Monday 7th August

There will be more essential engineering works taking place on Luas in Dublin between Saturday 5th and Monday 7th August (the Monday is a Bank Holiday in Ireland) with work being undertaken on the Green Line. A revised service will run over the weekend to take this work into account.

The gradual return to service of long-term absentees on Manchester Metrolink has continued in recent days with not one but two of their ranks being used in service again. 3099 was the first to return to action and was followed quite quickly by 3065.
