Manchester Metrolink Then & Now: Mauldeth Road West

For the last Sunday evening for a little while we are going back to our “Then & Now” to take a look at a couple of images showing Manchester Metrolink lines during construction and once trams were running in service.

The location of this week’s set of photos is Mauldeth Road West. This is located just after the junction between the East Didsbury and Manchester Airport lines with the East Didsbury line now running solo for the remainder of its route.

This image was taken from the Mauldeth Road West bridge where the tramway heads under the road on its continued journey. Looking at the scene on 23rd February 2010 we can see that the trackbed has been cleared in preparation for track installation. We are looking back towards St Werburgh’s Road here.

As the years go by, vegetation grows which makes it difficult to capture similar images. The houses on the right now have mature trees blocking their views of the trams and there is also plenty of green stuff on the left. 15th June 2023 is when the after image was taken as 3086 is at the front of a double unit on the way to East Didsbury.
