Councillors urge talks on extending Supertram to Stocksbridge

Councillors representing the Stocksbridge, Deepcar and Oughtibridge wards in Sheffield are urging officials at the South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive to consider extending the Supertram network to prevent the increase in congestion likely as a result of hundreds of new homes due to be built. No official plans are in place for extending Supertram – with the exception of the long awaited tram-train pilot to Rotherham – but it is hoped that once a business case is prepared for investment in the current network (currently being looked into) consideration will be given to an expanded system.

Crich announce ‘Big Shunt 2’ – the sequel!

Back in 2014, Crich Tramway Village allowed enthusiasts to view a series of shunting moves with various trams being moved in and out of the Exhibition Hall in connection with some changes to the displays within. The day, dubbed ‘The Big Shunt’ was considered a great success – and now in 2017, they’re doing it again! This time however, the shunting will take place on the last day of the main operating season, and so tram rides and the other attractions the museum has to offer will also be available as normal.

Protestors cause Metrolink disruption

Manchester Metrolink services running through St Peter’s Square were disrupted on Sunday 1st October after protestors decided to sit and stand on the tracks during protests outside the Conservative Party Conference (which was taking place at Manchester Central and the Midland Hotel). Whilst the Police dealt with the protestors Metrolink services were suspended through the area with trams from out of the city being turned at Cornbrook, Deansgate-Castlefield and Exchange Square. Services were still able to run into Piccadilly. Once the protestors were moved – two women were arrested on suspicion of obstructing the highway with one man arrested on suspicion of assaulting a Police officer – tram services resumed through the area but delays were still experienced.
