Luas Finglas extension given planning permission

The next extension of Dublin’s Luas network has moved a step closer after the awarding of a Railway Order by An Coimisiun Pleanala. This is the equivalent of a Transport and Works Act Order and is in effect planning permission for the Luas Finglas line which will be an extension of the green line from Broombridge.

RAIB confirm investigation into Metrolink Crossacres incident

The Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB) have started an investigation into an incident which occurred at Crossacres tramstop on 7th October 2025. This well reported incident saw a 11 year old boy become trapped between the platform and a departing tram suffering life-changing injuries as a result.

Annual report highlights LRSSB successes

The Light Rail Safety and Standards Board (LRSSB) annual report has been released and shows how the organisation is delivering added value to the sector whilst also reducing accident risks. They have delivered on a series of landmark projects that have saved the sector an estimated £2.6 million, when compared to the cost of operators and other organisations working independently.

In Pictures: DLR fleet changes – more B23s into service as further old units go for scrap

London’s Docklands Light Railway is one of two systems in the UK which is currently going through a major change in its operating fleet. Whilst for the Tyne and Wear Metro it’s a complete replacement of the fleet it’s a bit different on the DLR where the newer B2007 and B2009 will be retained, but there is still plenty of change with new trains entering service as older withdrawn units head off the scrapping.

In Pictures: Advert removals continue in Blackpool

As we’ve seen regularly over the past few months, Blackpool Transport have been making an effort to remove expired adverts off the trams. Many of these have been on the trams for significant periods of time and its making a difference to the look of many of the trams and frees them for future advertising too. The latest tram where a start has been made on removing old adverts is 008.

Metrolink drivers to be balloted on strike action over working conditions

Unite the Union have announced a ballot of almost 320 of their members who work as drivers on Manchester Metrolink, over concerns on working conditions and fears on fatigue. If they vote in favour of strike action, strikes could commence in late November during the busy Christmas Markets period.

The annual Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal was launched in late October but its not just people who will be wearing poppies in the lead up to Remembrance Sunday as once again trams are doing the very same thing! So far, both Blackpool and Sheffield have got off the mark with poppies on their vehicles.

In Pictures: Uniqlo advert on Edinburgh Trams 254

Another advertiser has returned to Edinburgh Trams after a break with 254 now carrying a vinyl wrap for Uniqlo. These vinyls were added earlier in October 2025 and whilst similar to some previous ads for Uniqlo do differ, particularly on the full height sections.

Work continues on new Supertram tram-train station

A major milestone has been reached in the construction of the new tram-train station at Magna with the installation of lift shafts and a new passenger overbridge. The station will be the first addition to the tram-train line between Sheffield and Rotherham since it started running and is set to open to passengers in early 2026.

In Pictures: Wicked spreads to Metrolink as Singin’ In The Rain also advertises

It’s the week of the musical on Manchester Metrolink as it becomes the second UK tramway to start advertising the Wicked: For Good movie (two trams for Metrolink as well as on the West Midlands Metro), whilst a musical from a much earlier era is also seen with a partial advert for the new production of Singin’ In The Rain at the Royal Exchange Theatre. The three trams to receive these latest vinyls are 3101 and 3117 (Wicked: For Good) and 3104 (Singin’ In The Rain).

Replica Metro train to return to the stage in Newcastle

You may remember in October 2024 we reported on how a replica Tyne and Wear Metro train was taking to the stage in Newcastle. The replica of 4001 was part of the set for Gerry and Sewell which ran last year, and now its been announced the play will return for another run at the Theatre Royal from 9th to 13th June 2026.

You wait 17 years for a tram to carry an advert for a movie and then two come within a day! As alluded to in the original article, there are now two trams carrying identical wraps promoting the Wicked: For Good film on the West Midlands Metro with 57 confirmed as the second tram to carry the advertising vinyls. And West Midlands Metro aren’t the only tramway where this is the case (more on that tomorrow!).

In Pictures: Works underway at Infirmary Road, Sheffield

One of three tramways in the UK which is currently seeing engineering work take place is South Yorkshire Supertram. This phase of work is seeing rail being replaced at Infirmary Road leading to no trams running beyond Shalesmoor to either Malin Bridge or Middlewood.
