The Light Rail Safety and Standards Board (LRSSB) have been undertaking a “national tour” to help networks drive further safety enhancements informed by a new safety risk model (SRM). A series of site visits by members of the LRSSB has enabled operators to review their individual SRMs using the latest incident data collected using the LRSSB’s Tramway Accident and Incident Reporting system (TAIR).
Head of Safety Risk Management at the LRSSB, Laura Reardon, commented: “The sector’s commitment to the reporting system since the last review has delivered a significant boost for the process, enabling networks to make even more informed decisions based on the data from TAIR. The reviews also provide the networks an opportunity to take into account changes to their systems, such as extensions, as well as measures they’ve recently taken to enhance safety for customers, employees and the wider public.”
The “tour” kicked off over the summer and workshops have already been held with representatives in Blackpool, Edinburgh, and the West Midlands. The LRSSB expect to visit the remaining four systems over the winter.
Laura added: “As a result, by the spring of 2026, we should have completed fully updated SRMs for all seven networks, enabling operators and owners to develop their safety strategies, while we will also have an updated, sector-wide model that will help to shape the LRSSB’s future priorities.”
