The section of the Tyne and Wear Metro between Hebburn and South Shields will be closed for five days between Monday 4th and Friday 8th August 2025 to allow overhead line works to take place.

In Pictures: Crich launch Crowdfunder to support Access Tram 2

If all goes according to plan, Crich Tramway Village could be the proud owners of a fully functional new Access Tram by March 2026 with the project to convert Blackpool Centenary 645 moving up a gear as a Crowdfunder is launched to help fund the work.

Tyne & Wear Metro signalling system upgrade confirmed

It has been confirmed by the UK Government that they will be funding a major upgrade of the signalling system on the Tyne and Wear Metro. The DfT made the announcement on Tuesday 8th July.

In Pictures: Summer Supertram trackworks get underway

Its summer and what more excuse is needed for some more improvements works on the South Yorkshire Supertram network at a time which is traditionally quieter with schools out for their summer holidays. The first stage of works this summer are on the Blue and Purple routes near Manor Top, Hollinsend and Park Grange and work got underway on Monday 28th July as seen in these images from Stuart Cooke.

In Pictures: Double Ozzy Osbourne trams as West Midlands Metro pays its respects

Wednesday 30th July 2025 saw Birmingham pause to remember a music legend as Ozzy Osbourne’s funeral procession took place ahead of a private funeral the following day. West Midlands Metro were amongst those who paid their respects and with 37 currently being unavailable for service two other trams were used carrying his name.

Overnight NET maintenance in August

Essential maintenance works on Nottingham Express Transit will see no trams running between Wilkinson Street and The Forest after 2200 for four nights in August. Taking place from Monday 4th to Thursday 7th August 2025, the work involves repairs on the corner of Radford Road and Wilkinson Street and has been timed at night to minimise disruption for passengers.

In Pictures: Edinburgh Trams 254 used for testing

You may be forgiven for thinking that once the last service tram returns to depot at the end of each day that nothing will happen on a tramway until it all starts again the next day. Edinburgh Trams losses reduce

The latest accounts posted by Edinburgh Trams have shown that losses have reduced from the previous 12 months, although were still recorded as almost £10 million. Much of the loss – as it has been for several years – can be attributed to the annual asset fee they have been charged by the Council since 2018 to go towards the additional borrowing costs associated with the extreme cost overruns of the original project.

Control centre simulator helps to drive tramway safety and efficiency on the West Midlands Metro

The West Midlands Metro have become the latest UK tramway to benefit from cutting-edge simulator technology which has been developed alongside the Light Rail Safety and Standards Board (LRSSB). Whilst we’re used to talking about simulators in regards to driver training, the technology has been used to create an operational control room environment which has been installed at the Training Academy in Wednesbury.

Petition launched to get Brighton 53 back to the city

Over the past 15 years a dedicated group of volunteers have been working on the restoration of the last remaining Brighton Corporation Tramways passenger tram – no. 53. Whilst over £90,000 has been spent on restoring the tram, it has now reached the stage where it needs to be moved for further work to be completed. Ideally 53 would find a home somewhere within the city of Brighton and Hove and to try and make this possible a petition has recently been launched urging the local Council to provide support to the Brighton Tram 53 Society.
