The Blackpool Tramway has recently helped to carry a potent symbol of hope that’s saving lives by raising awareness of the biggest killer of men and women under the age of 35. The “Baton of Hope” is part of a national campaign which urges people to stand up to suicide.
The beautifully crafted “Baton of Hope” is now touring towns and cities across the UK after being launched on the Fylde Coast at the start of September at an event organised by the Blackpool-based Empowerment Charity.
The first leg of the tour saw the tram take a ride on a tram and Blackpool Transport Managing Director Jane Cole said she was delighted to support the initiative at the request of a member of her team with close family connections to the campaign.
Jane said: “Suicide affects so many people who often suffer in silence following the loss of a loved one, and we wanted to show that we stand in solidarity with them. We are also very proud of Liz, one of our conductors, who carried the baton in memory of a family member and proved an excellent ambassador for Blackpool on what proved to be an emotional yet inspiring day.”
