Trams are set to return to Wolverhampton St George’s for the first time in just over two years from Monday 29th September with West Midlands Metro announcing plans for a temporary timetable to run for three weeks.
The line to St George’s was closed from 28th August 2023 for what was originally expected to be a short period of time whilst work took place on the extension to Wolverhampton Station. But the autumn 2023 deadline came and went and with construction works continuing alongside the stop there were no signs of trams returning, although ticket machines were installed.
August 2025 saw the first signs that trams may return to service soon with a closure to allow for works to take place and now it has been confirmed that Monday 29th September will see trams running to St George’s once more (two years, one month and a day later!).
But its not quite as simple as saying its open permanently as that won’t be happening until November. It will be used Monday to Saturday only and between 0700 and 1900 only.
The temporary timetable will run Monday 29th September to Saturday 18th October.
Monday-Saturday:
- Start of service to 0700, trams every 15 minutes Wolverhampton Station to Edgbaston Village
- 0700-1900 trams every 15 minutes from Wolverhampton Station and Wolverhampton St George’s to Edgbaston Village. This combines to give trams up to every 8 minutes between The Royal and Edgbaston Village.
- From 1900 to end of service trams every 15 minutes Wolverhampton Station to Edgbaston Village
Sunday
- Trams every 12 minutes Wolverhampton Station to Edgbaston Village
Then from Sunday 19th October things change again as there will be more works taking place. This will be at both Wolverhampton St George’s and also on Broad Street in Birmingham.
Between Sunday 19th October and Thursday 30th October:
- Trams will run from Wolverhampton Station to Library
Then from Friday 31st October:
- Trams will run from Wolverhampton Station to Edgbaston Village
Finally, from early November trams should return to Wolverhampton St George’s permanently. This will also mark the start of driver training onto the Eastside extension to the temporary terminus at Millennium Point.
The article on the West Midlands Metro website concludes: “There will be some changes to services during November and December. This is to ensure that we can continue to provide a safe, reliable and robust service once the new stops at Albert Street and Millennium Point are open. We will share more information about these planned changes as we approach these milestones.”
